Not sure when this started happening but my IP keeps changing every week or so. This has become difficult for work since they need to white list my IP in order for me connect to the SQL DB.
I changed my internet from 75/75 to Gigabit and also got 2 new routers in a mesh network recently. I’ve always had verizon but they did have to tweak the box outside a bit in order for me to get faster than 250mbps…
I have a hunch maybe my router is doing a weekly reset or something and that changes my IP but that wouldn’t make sense since it shouldn’t affect my public IP? I’m not really sure how FIOS works since this fiber cable goes into this box outside of my house and then a ethernet is ran into my house. I just connect that into my primary mesh node.
Would this be something on my end? Example, my router is doing maintenance resetting or is my public IP just being released by my ISP?
Edit: hey everyone thank you for concern about them allowing my public IP. Apparently I misunderstood what’s going on in the network. The VM I use constantly gets assigned a new IP and that’s an internal one… So that’s the one I’m having to update.
Check with your ISP about whether you can get a static IP.
I have seen the cost for this vary depending on country/ISP from something totally trivial (the cost of a couple of hamburgers) to having to sign up to business internet plans (not trivial at all).
In your router you should be able to see the WAN IP and also how long is left on your DHCP reservation from your ISP. See if the coincides with when the IP releases and renews.
Usually, if your router is connected when the lease is up it will renew with the same IP, but not all ISPs do that. You may have to contact them and pay for a static public address.
You might also check if there is a way to VPN into your office instead of having a port open to the SQL server with source restrictions.
In layman’s terms this is called dynamic IP and it is normal for it (by it I mean your public IP) to change frequently. The only way you can avoid that is by checking with your ISP if they have a static IP service which I am sure most ISPs have.
Thanks for your advice I’ll check it out. Also I realized I misunderstood what’s going on in my company’s network. I thought it was my IP that’s changing but it’s not my public IP they’re white listing it has to do with an internal IP.
