App tracking protection incompatible with VPN

The app tracking protection on the Android browser app seems like a great feature but I can’t use it at the same time as my proton vpn which blocks web trackers.

Which would be more effective/important in terms of protecting my privacy?

DuckDuckGo just launched a VPN that works w app tracking protection at the same time if you want to give that a try: https://duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/privacy-pro/vpn/app-tracking-protection/

The paid version of proton VPN includes netshieds which also prevents trackers.

Fair point.

The reason I asked in this sub is that I expect people in it to be more privacy focused than your average android user (or even networking guy tbf) but you have a point about the proton sub.

I know its a subjective but I am only expecting people’s opinions, like you say there is no right or wrong answer.

Could this prevent app tracking? Assuming the apps send telemetry back via DNS calls which proton would filter?

Great detail, exactly what I was after, thanks. Wish I could upvote more than once!
