Australia ping and VPNs

My ping is at 400 steady and isnt stopping me from playing, but sick of the delay.

Never used a VPN before, any aussies that can recommend one that is easy to use and setup , would be appreciated.

Thanks

I moved from japan to korea recently. I had insane lag issues even though it was relatively the same distance and internet speed. I got express vpn and set it to japan and i have had a massive improvement in response. I recommend trying the same.

Hey OP, I’m from New Zealand and had the same issue - 400 ping on a good day, most days 600+.

The problem lies with the fact that ZOS uses Akamai.com servers to route their traffic and ‘protect against ddos attacks’ - which means traffic from our side of the world go first to the Akamai node in Hong Kong, then all the way across the European stretch, then to America. It’s idiotic, and thats why we get shit latency.

I started using Mudfish VPN, and setting it to Los Angeles. It has its own compatibility settings specifically for ESO. My ping is now a constant 270ish.

Recommended.

FYI a VPN won’t magically make your connection faster UNLESS there is a problem with the route between you and the server. You can test that by running tracert to your region’s server. In most cases a VPN will actually make your connection worse.

(there’s probably not an issue with the route)

So I’m not sure I understand, why are you using a VPN to play and what are you expecting it to do for you?

I found that using vpns was more problematic. It lowered the average ping sure, but increased jitter on the connection.

I can compensate for high pings, I can’t compensate for fluctuating ping.

Hooked up a vpn last night and im now averaging 220

I also use mudfish and it gives me a similar improvement.

Hey, i recently got mudfish and set it with ESO… but i am experiencing flux in my ping… it’ll go from 270 bouncing up and down to 500… Do you still use mudfish are you experiencing any issues?

Any other game i have zero issues, just eso.

There is definitely an issue with the route - all Oceania traffic gets directed to the Akamai node in Hong Kong before going to the US via Europe - literally the longest route possible. Its because of ESOs retarded ddos protection, all traffic goes through Akamai. In most places this isnt a problem, but here it is.

VPN use greatly improves your latency if you’re in Oceania.

VPNs, especially gaming specific vpns can improve the pathing between the player and the server. This is especially the case with ESO due to their stupid ddos protection as noted elsewhere in the thread.

Its halved my ping consistently since i started using it.

Damn that sucks. No other way around?

Yeah that’s normal from time to time. It can depend on which Mudfish node you’re connecting to, the state of the ESO servers, Akamai traffic … a whole bunch of things. Ping spikes are a hazard in ESO. I’d personally try connecting to a different Mudfish node and see if it improves - I tend not to get ping spikes very often any more unless I’m playing in prime US time.

I was second post in here. That info wasn’t posted when I asked.

Nothing that I’m aware of.

Was a fresh install 2 days ago. Just moved over from ps4

Ill check out my firewalls.

Getting a new rig im 2 weeks. Not sure if that will help? Fps isnt an issue though.

Its not weird, ESO has a highly specific problem due to Akamai that ZOS refuse to acknowledge. He definitely wouldn’t need to reinstall the game.

Wait… What… No! . Firewalls? Reinstalling the game and VPNs won’t make you connect to the servers faster… He doesn’t have the problem in other games because they might have better latency, networking code, be more peer to peer, not require as much data or they have servers closer to him.
This entire thread makes zero sense.
