Best VPN for torrenting in Canada? My research so far as a complete beginner

Thanks to posts by others here I concluded that:

The most important things to look for are:

  1. Port Forwarding (important to really be safe for torrenting but I still don’t fully understand what it is or what it does)
  2. Split Tunneling. (No clue what this does but everyone says it’s important.)
  3. Pricing.

Judging by recent changes and data, it seems the best VPNs right now are:

AIRVPN and ProtonVPN.

So, as a beginner, what do you advise me to get?

I use AirVPN in Canada and have for over three years. No problems.

Split tunneling is allowing apps to connect to the Internet with and without your VPN. You select which apps connect each way. It’s not easy to do with AirVPN but it can be done. Personally I prefer setting up a Virtual Machine for all apps that use a VPN. For me that’s only qBittorrent.

Windscribe. It’s cheap, fast, and has all of those features and more.

Here’s my 2c for you, also speaking as a beginner, who uses a VPN for privacy (and occasionally torrenting where the VPN is bound/binded to the client „qBitTorrent“).

I don’t have port forwarding (and I wouldn’t know how to set it up), and yet I download and (by definition) upload torrents.

My privacy concerns are permanent, so I don’t split (tunnel) my VPN… it’s always turned on, no exceptions.

Prices vary considerably…. shop around.

I‘d like to throw two things into your considerations: speed, and location of VPN office in the event of a problem.

how did this turn out?

Port forwarding doesn’t really safeguard you, it just allows others to connect to you easily. If you don’t have port forwarded, you can only connect to others having ports forwarded on their end

AirVPN if you want cheap, proton Vpn is kinda expensive but you can go with it if you want

For split tunneling it’s not taht important IF you always turn on your vpn though some app/website really doesn’t like vpn.

Basically what it does is it only let certain app use vpn while other not

Some good answers already, but it may be worth stating that generally the torrenting laws in Canada tend towards not being a huge deal. Big ISPs like Rogers/Bell/Shaw are likely to drop you as a client for copyright violations, but there are other ISPs that have stated publicly they will not do so.

This thread is old, but some recent comments: https://www.reddit.com/r/canada/comments/8f7yv5/is_downloading_torrents_illegal_in_canada_and_how/

Does airvpn have port forwarding?

I’m sorry if it’s a stupid question but since I only use it for torrenting, would it be ez to set up?

Windscribe or AirVPN?

what VPN do you use?

It’s been an year and you’ve probably figured it out, but the most important step is to make a VM. It’s good especially because not all torrent files are safe. You can set up the VM in max like an hour with any random guide. After that you need to bind your VPN to the client. It keeps traffic from leaking. When that’s done you’re ready for just about anything.

Yes it’s easy to set up.
