Can't open Riot Games client nor Valorant with VPN?

So I’ve always played using NordVPN as it fixes much of my latency issues, today when I wanted to start the game or even the Riot client it shows this message. It only works if I have VPN off which is pointless imo, and if I connect VPN while in-game it disables my comms completely and kicks me out of the application once the match is done. Anyone having this issue as well?

For me, i live in Portugal, i kept the VPN in Portugal and it didnt work, then i changed it to spain and it worked.

Soo, try to change your VPN location for another country in the same region as you LOL account.

Hope it helped.

I know im a bit late to this thread but i’ve also been having issues with this too, in the VPN changes that riot made, in their statement they said that they would be restricting access from higher traffick servers/countries. So what i did was instead of connecting to the London VPN server i just used a different countries that was closest to me and i loaded and played the game with no issues, Hope this helps.

NordVPN works on League of Legends if you connect to server “United States #9926” I found this out after contacting NordVPN support.

Happening to me right now. Ever since hurricane helene our internet has been acting really strange. Im lagging, but also not? And its only for league of legends and youtube- NOTHING else is affected at all. We have contacted our internet provider to make sure nothing was damaged with the storms that ravaged our area in kentucky, but they were already fixed and they say everything is fine on their end. It honestly seems like someone is doing it, but i have no real evidence of that other than my character doing random things im not telling it to.
I remembered I bought a vpn and hadnt used it in a while because it helped a lot when ff14 was getting ddosed before, but its not helpful with how strong its being ddosed now so i just stopped using it.
When i go to connect while in the client- it just says i have no internet connection and kicks me out. Then gives me the servers are down IF it loads. Kind of ridiculous.
This lag feels a LOT like ff14 getting ddosed. I cant move, chat, ping, use abilities, or anything at random times while also randomly just having my game get disconnected and crashed instantly. The whole rest of the game keeps going on in perfect timing, so it cant exactly just be lagging right? Either that or riot servers are bricking and im not able to send my inputs in as fast as im receiving them. My bandwidth is not even a fourth of the way filled and thats with everyone using a ton of intensive games. Ethernet is not an option for me for reasons too long to explain. Where do we even go from here? Im about to get banned again because of my lag issues. This is ridiculous. I just want to play aram and tft and chill. Cant even play tft of all things. This is why i dont buy as skins or anything despite wanting to- because they are just ignoring it and we are having to find the answers ourselves to THEIR issues.

For anyone that just wants to use VPN on their computer but still wants to play this game without turning off their entire VPN service you can bypass just the game:
The issue is it’s not as easy as other apps you need to bypass everything riot related including: riot client, lol app, vanguard, riot crash handler etc.

Start the game without vpn → look inside task manager on what is running → make sure everything is added as an application under your vpn bypass menu.

I had everything but missed the RiotCrashHandler and the client would not start - was getting the same error as OP

Man this happened a longg time ago

Wasnt worth posting since almost no one had the same issue

I’ve lost interest in League by now and have been living a much healthier and happier life lol no more cold showers (Azzgold Emi joke)

Mine was that they said there shouldnt be problems for ppl connecting to their home region. So me connecting to USA from USA shouldnt b a problem right??.. ??!

ExitLag is working fine, dunno about other “VPNs” (I know ExitLag is not exactly a VPN, but it works like one for the ones who don’t know a lot)

I haven’t gotten to the point of using it in a match but I have had all the same issues while using NordVPN, same error message etc.
Also if used when in the lobby, your friends list goes blank.

I contacted Riot Support about that 3 days ago, because my VPN (Mullvad VPN) was having the same issues.

Their answer was basically “Get in touch with your VPN because over here no VPN blocks or issues are happening”

I do have the same issue and still hoping for help with a riot dev

I’m having the same issue using Surfshark, and Proton. Submitted a ticket, but have not heard back yet. Working with Proton on this issue as well.

Having the same issues with NordVPN, for bit over a week now.

But I’ll be damned if I turn off my VPN just to play their games, I guess this is where I quit.

Same here with Proton VPN, it kinda sucks, I messaged Proton about it and waiting for an answer if it’s on their side or if just Riot is being Riot.

Same here. I’ve switched from Cyberghost to NordVPN, and to Surfshark but still having the same error.

Tried to send a ticket to Riot but no response yet.

I think it has to do with the specific server you chose I couldn’t log on to the Nord VPN Los Angeles but i switched to the San Fran and was able to log in. My guess is that they aren’t blocking all vpns but specific locations.

I came across this problem also, what I did is turning on vpn after champ select when the loading screen appears, but after finishing a game and going back to the client it will say “Session has expired please login again”. So you’re gonna have to turn off vpn again then login and repeat.

I’m using surfshark by the way

I study network and tech. All you need to know is that Riot can block you from using stuff if they detected your VPN, also from their site. If you wanted to access their site with the VPN, but it doesn’t open and say its blocked, you should try finding what we call the backdoor site. It is what I used to do when the school blocked certain websites since I couldn’t download a VPN on the computer. Keep in mind that accessing the backdoor technically is not illegal but still dangerous in a way. (never found troubles when accessing it to be real with you)

You can use the split tunnelling feature to allow riot direct connection and keep your VPN on for security.

Using Private Internet Access I have been able to fix this issue. For PIA users, selecting the “Port Forwarding” Option so it turns green (It’s a small circular icon under the ‘Quick Settings’ header) makes the list of servers to VPN to only show those which allow port forwarding. For me, these all work with Val/League. Maybe other VPN’s have a similar option?
