ChatGPT blocking access from VPN

Since yesterday, I am experiencing this issue when connecting to ChatGPT through a VPN, connection is refused with the following error:

Try clearing your cookies, local storage and session storage on open openai.com and chat.openai.com

To do that: F12 - Application

Then close website, turn on VPN and try again

I just noticed this problem too. It was working fine until suddenly I got that message. I disabled the VPN then refreshed the page and it loaded but the display is messed up… the sidebar is not displaying correctly. After this experience, I’m thinking about canceling my plus subscription…

When i used a vpn i got a heart attack. I thought i was banned but realised it was just my vpn.

Web Protection on NordVPN blocks ChatGPT from working. This is how to fix it.

UNOFFICIAL FIX

I’ve discovered that it is only the URL trimmer that is causing the issue with ChatGPT.

You can keep Web Protection ON, you just need to bypass URL Trimmer *temporarily*, and then add an exclusion.

Here is how you do it:

First get ChatGPT working

  • In NordVPN go to Threat Protection
  • Under Web Protection, click ‘View activity and customize’
  • Uncheck only the ‘URL Trimmer’ box
  • Open your browser and go to chat.openai.com
  • Ask a question to make sure it works

Now make the fix permanent

  • Go back to NordVPN and search for chat.openai.com in the list of URLs under ‘Web protection activity’
  • Click on the 3 dots on the right side, and choose ‘exclude this domain from threat blocking’
  • Now enable ‘URL trimmer again’
  • Go to ChatGPT and ask another question - it should work now.

No, actually mines doing it too. At first it didn’t but now I can’t even go to the help desk on the app to ask questions unless I turn off my VPN.

I ended up having to create a new one.

I am using SurfShark, and all euro and usa-nodes are blocked. Other countries are still ok, but I suspect this could cease working quickly!

can confirm that as of today it did the same for me (use KeepSolid Unlimited - it’s the first time it’s done so). Not a good look IMHO!
