I was downloading some movies this morning after turning on Cyber Ghost. I had qbittorrent on in the background for about two hours. When I checked to see if Cyber Ghost was still on, the timer was frozen at about an hour in and the data counter was stuck at 300mb. I looked at qbittorrent after stopping the downloads and I saw that over 6 gigs total was downloaded during that 2 hour session. Cyber Ghost also would not launch successfully again until I reset my computer.
Is there anyway I can find out if the torrents switched to my home IP after that? Because, I am not sure if I was still connected but the app just appeared stuck. I use ATT and I got my first warning early last year, so I’m a little worried. This is the first problem I’ve had with Cyber Ghost. Anyway if anyone can help me, I’d appreciate it.
The app only controls the underlying software that’s actually used to connect you. You’d need to see Cyberghost app’s logs if there’re any. Maybe you did fallback on home IP maybe you didn’t.
As an update, I do not believe my data leaked. Before reinstalling I turned on Cyber Ghost again and it froze up however when I check my IP address via 3rd parties it listed the VPN address. After reinstalling the counter doesn’t freeze up anymore.
I guess you didn’t then. Binding the network interface is perhaps the most important thing you should do after selecting a VPN for torrenting. It greatly reduces the likelihood of leaks, as qB will only have connection while VPN is enabled. Check section 3 of this thread.
Without binding, I’d suggest you check the VPN logs to see if there were any disconnects while the app was freezed. You may need to reach out to their customer support to know where they’re located. But tbh not much you can do if there were, so perhaps no point checking anyway. Hope for the best and bind the adapter, you will be fine.
Oh, is this the killswitch I’ve been hearing about? Also have you heard anything about ATT having strikes or something? I’m just curious that they’ll terminate the service if there was a leak.
For sure man. Thank you for being so helpful! I don’t usually like to torrent stuff, but I got a 4k laptop and due to DRM there is pretty much no way to stream 4k content on my device. Only exception is the actual Netflix app for Windows, that has 4k content available to stream. You can’t even play a 4k blu ray directly from an external drive. You have to go through the hassle of actually ripping the thing. So, torrenting 4k content is most convenient option left for me. Even though the file sizes are huge.
Killswitch is usually a feature of the VPN client app. This is something similar in nature, but arguably more effective. No idea about the ATT stuff, that’s the american telco? Someone else will have to answer that one.
Well, if you can still refund CyberGhost I’d recommend that and choosing a better VPN. But if not, yes that’s pretty much it. Just bind and you’re good to go. You may have been confused due to the port-forwarding instructions, but that doesn’t apply to CyberGhost as it’s not a good VPN for torrenting (lacks pf).
