Normally with the desktop app I get close to my usual 300Mbps, however after having just followed the router VPN setup instructions specifically for my DD-WRT router, my speed is capping at 20-25Mbps until i disable the OpenVPN config. Any suggestions or ideas?
PS: the VPN router setup instructions are confusing, Why download the UDP config file if it’s not used in the instructions? Where is section 3.1 as listed after step 4 per step 4’s NOTE? So confusing.
Also, what am I supposed to do with the downloaded Server UDP file taht ends with a “.ovpn” ?
Hi, as u/LifeInSpain mentioned, it can be difficult to get high speed when setting up Surfshark directly on your router via OpenVPN. Since routers usually use weak hardware, it’s best to use our apps on individual devices or to set up Surfshark on a Wireguard-compatible router since the Wireguard protocol is lightweight and demands less resources.
You just upload the file to your router, and add username and password.
You need a top of the line router to reach 200-250 Mbps with openvpn. Check your router cpu during speed test, it is probably maxed out.
I suggest an ASUS router with Merlin. Works better and much more simple to configure than DD-WRT. They also support WireGuard and you can reach 500 Mbps
