I’ve had good luck with the included Encrypt.me in the past but the last several months it is highly unstable and often unusable on Windows. I’ve been forced to uninstall and reinstall it otherwise it won’t ever fully launch the app or connect. It’s been a problem on two different machines.
Recently I heard that Encrypt.me has been sold, is not as well supported and isn’t as secure. I can go buy a different VPN service but was curious if Eero has any plans to change it up or if these issues are just mine.
Correct, it was sold to Ziff-Davis in 2021 and combined with StrongVPN. They’re supporting (rather tepidly) current EncryptMe users and pushing new ones to StrongVPN.
As an FYI, since the sale neither EncryptMe nor StrongVPN are recommended by Consumer Reports, PC World, PC Magazine, Computer World, or the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) as both quality and privacy protection have floundered under the new owners.
Ziff-Davis formerly used StrongVPN in their offices, dropped it in November of last year in favor of Cisco’s AnyConnect, which is very telling.
I also wonder if Eero will change/drop its partnership with them because of this.
For the past week I’ve been having a myriad of problems with Encrypt.me. So many that I can’t even understand what’s going on. What a complete hassle. One more thing I really wish I didn’t have to figure out, but ultimately will have to.
Just got Encrypt.me from the Eero Secure+ package, and super disappointed so far. Most google searches return the following error from Google, forcing me to do the Captcha routine to complete a search: “Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network.” I have used plenty of VPN’s in the past (VyprVPN, NordVPN, etc.) and have never seen this type of issue. They just work. Very frustrating, to say the least.
Can anyone explain to me why I have to have my network secured in order to access my Gmail? But then it has to be unsecured in order to access my work apps using Okta. I even tried uninstalling Encrypt,me altogether, but that didn’t help. And their FAQs and Help page sure don’t do that (help). I don’t think I would have started using Encrypt,me were it not for my Eero Secure+ subscriptions. Frustrating.
I just discovered, on another board, that using the Guest network instead of the primary network has solved my problems. I have no idea why, I have no idea what would be different, but I’m going with it. Phew.
