ExpressVPN charged me after cancellation (iOS App Store) - Need advice on refund

Hi Reddit,

Canceled ExpressVPN trial but got charged anyway. Never used the app. How can I get a refund?

I recently had an issue with ExpressVPN and need some advice. Here’s what happened:

I signed up for the ExpressVPN free trial (auto-renews to yearly if not canceled).
Never used the app, but remembered to cancel on the last day of the trial.
Cancellation showed in my iPhone subscriptions, and my Revolut account wasn’t charged.
However, Apple later tried to charge my Revolut, then successfully charged another credit card on my Apple Pay. So im stuck with 1 year of ExpressVPN and at the moment.

The problem:
ExpressVPN’s website states: “To avoid charges, cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the free trial.”
This wasn’t clear when purchasing through the App Store.

My questions:
What’s the process for requesting a refund in this situation?
How can I prove I didn’t use the app and had canceled the subscription?
Is it normal for companies to charge before the trial ends like this?

I know I should’ve canceled earlier, but I feel this is unfair. Any advice would be appreciated!

Go to iTunes and request refund on the website

It’s standard for almost every subscription that I’ve seen through Apple that you must cancel no later than the day before or they will charge you.

You can call Apple support and ask. I’d you do a chargeback through your card, Apple might cancel your account. All these companies hate chargebacks.

Update: As i live in EU i had a “We always give you the right to withdraw within 14 days” ability to click and for what it seems to be right now i got a email from Apple that the subscripton was canceld. I also recieved two emails from ExpressVPN about Apple canceling my subscription.

So i assume a refund is coming in a few days after seeing a recipe email that had the App name and amount and a minus sign right in front of the amount. I assume it’s successful then and if it helps anyone you now know how to do it.

Thanks, i did and was able to select just that app and i proceeded to select the Refund within 14 day policy and now await a email from apple. I was unsure what to select from the dropdown list but i think i clicked the right one.

I have a valid case though, and i clearly did not use the app. So i figured i could use that as some appeal proof. But big companies like Apple don’t respond well to logic u think? I am a long term Apple customer with MacBook and multiple iPhones so surely they must have a goodwill policy same as amazon if they see that.
