Hey everyone,
I travel to China frequently for work and have to be completely offline. Most of the paid VPNs I use do not work or I have to reset them while they are working. I have my own VPS server. Or I can rent a small VPS. Do you know any tutorials on how to set up my own VPN server?
Keep internet traffic low (avoid massive video streaming for example)and devices connected less than 4 are the keys to avoid getting your VPS getting banned. This is what I read from an old post. Moreover, I recommend you pick one that you can change IP easily. For example AWS lightsail. You get new IP for rebooting the server….By the way, some VPS providers do not appreciate you get their IP range banned too frequently though. The GFW gradually blocks encryption protocols that it does not recognize.
So sometimes you succeed for being lucky , and just for now. Get ready for plan B…
I live in China, use Astrill for 5 years already; reliable but expensive
Others I know that work are: wannaflix; lets vpn
Afaik Reality-Vless works in China. You can install 3x-ui on your VPS and setup Reality-Vless with cloudfare, also maybe it’s worth to remove .cn websites from routing
Girlfriend was in China recently and used letsvpn, and so did her friends there, no issues.
Are you familiar with this provider?
Honestly VPN’s (even private) are not particularly reliable anymore as they are too easy to detect the traffic from.
I have several personal ones (OpenVPN and Wireguard) and they just don’t work reliably anymore.
You will be best reading around the guides on Proxies on here, everyone has an opinion on the “best” combo.
Shadowsocks used to be the easy one component solution but again not really effective anymore. (I also have a shadowsocks server)
Unfortunately subreddit here won’t be so willing to help you with this. They’ll say look at the mega thread but the tutorials are outdated and don’t work.
i used lets vpn while on wifi,at pokefi with datavpn plan while outside, i was on quangzou from 24 to 29th
Google how to setup x-ui with xray vless, should work, there’s also an option in x-ui that should block connection to Chinese IPs so it couldn’t get detected
esim data with a vpn seems to be the most reliable way nowadays especially during any CCP event. Not as fast as WiFi though and it’s about $1/GB
LetsVPN messes up your internet settings on Windows.
I havent try lt yet but i really dont trust vpn companies
On Windows it messes up your internet settings. I don’t trust that app for that precise reason. It gives you some kind of warning that XYZ isn’t set up and that it will do it for you. Then, without the VPN turned on, your internet becomes unreliable and slow.
As soon as I uninstalled it and reset everything, my internet worked perfectly again.
Is shadowstock worth a try?
My friend got its VPS banned after a few days of using the same setup in China. Probably would need to do a little bit of tinkering
Thank you. I will try this. Do u think its good idea to install into new vps ? My main vps has my websites inside
Looks like only Lets vpn working
I hope it will work in Shanghai also.
Understandable. I was fairly hesitant for my girlfriend to use this provider, but it seems the norm in China.
Otherwise, she was lucky that our mobile provider here in NZ, seemed to bypass the great firewall of China. It natively supported browsing all the blocker social media websites without a need for a VPN.
