[Help] Best way to set up a mobile wifi hotspot from android phone to laptop? I am on mobile data and my laptop data seems to be throttled by my ISP when using PIA

I just got Private Internet Access yesterday. Loving it.

I noticed this with the last VPN also, my laptop data is a lot slower (or off) than my mobile data after a few downloads or Netflix or something big.

Is there a way of tunneling my wifi hotspot from my phone to my laptop so the ISP thinks this is the one connection?

At the moment to connect my laptop to PIA, I have to turn off PIA on my phone, turn on PIA on my laptop, connect from laptop to phone hotspot, then turn on PIA on my phone.

From my understanding of networks, my phone acts as a router and my ISP might know, by the network layer (maybe data link layer), that it is sending packets to something which isn’t the final destination.

My phone is rooted. I installed “VPN Hotspot” but no matter what settings I tried, I didn’t notice any difference.

Thanks for your help.

/u/magicpushbroom, I am sorry but the only way to use your Mobile hotspot when connected to the VPN is by the way that you mentioned by connecting a device that is using the VPN to your hotspot so long as that device is not running a VPN also. I however, would like to give you some suggestions on how to possibly increase when downloading or just in general.

First I would enable small packets within your Desktop application settings. this can be found in your apps settings > Connections.

The second option is to change the ports that your application is connecting over. Please use the following instructions to change the ports in our app:

  1. Disconnect the VPN

  2. Click the three dots on the top right-hand corner of the application and select Settings

.3. Go to the Connection tab

  1. Select a different "Connection type" and “Remote port” combination in the menu.

Note: Selecting UDP or TCP changes the port options on the “Remote port” menu.

  1. Reconnect to the VPN.

  2. Repeat the above steps as needed until you find a combination that works for you.
Please be aware that we can not guarantee this connectivity method will work and highly suggest not using a hotspot when using the VPN.

There are several ways your isp can tell if you’re using your phone as a hot spot, and this isn’t the place to ask about stealing services from your phone company. Sorry.

Thanks very much for the tips.

I already did the small (mobile) packets. I’ll perfect the rest in time. Thanks.

“Stealing services”. What? I pay for the internet. It says nothing about using a hotspot on my contract

Use magisk as root provider. There is several “ttl fix” modules for just that. For isp it will be as if it’s only a phone.

They closely monitor traffic patterns and speeds to make sure you are not using their valuable bandwidth as an alternative to buying actual broadband.

Bandwidth over cellular is very limited compared to a real cable or FTTP provider, even if you pay extra to use a hotspot and unlimited bandwidth. They don’t intend it to replace a broadband internet connection, just browsing and streaming. Even on unlimited if you are using excessive bandwidth you WILL be throttled from every cellular provider.

The fact is cellular networks could not handle the load of everyone using it as a full broadband connection, or they would be offering cellular internet already. And Elon Musk would not be planning to launch a massive grid of satellites into space to provide true wireless broadband. Your cell phone is not a full fledged internet connection.

Thanks for the reply. Is that searching in Magisk Manager? Only two modules came up for "TTL Fix’, both for models of Xiaomi phones which I don’t have. I couldn’t find anything in XPosed either.

True. I get what you’re saying. They want me to buy fibre from their sister company. Getting PrivateInternetAccess has helped a lot for keeping my speed high. I am hopeful that there is a way of avoiding throttling conpletely.

I don’t stream on my phone at all, I prefer watching things on my laptop. The “fair usage” limit is 80GB on the contract, but I’ve noticed both get slowed down the more I use a hotspot, especially for downloading something big.
