How can I set up a VPN to access my NAS outside my network? :(

u/thelizardking0725 Tailscale worked beautifully! Super easy to set up, and it’s now
running, all in less than 10 minutes. I still can’t believe it! Thank
you!

I’m afraid this is a very tricky option, in my country almost every ISP won’t connect you to your own modem to avoid “security issues”. You must use their modem, you can use any router you want, but you’re stuck with their modems.

fair point, all have different use cases.

Not OP, but what happens if someone learns your Tailscale password? Wouldn’t you be in the same situation as with Quick connect? Or do individual devices have to be registered?

there have been exploits for Synology

Really? When?

Hi, what are the advantages of tail scale compared to wireguard which is free and open source? Ty

awesome, and good to know myself for the future.

Yay, glad it’s working! I’ve never used it, so I don’t know if there are any limitations. I think you can modify the config so that instead of it acting as a point to point tunnel, it can be more like a head end server and provide access to the entire subnet the NAS resides on if that’s something you need.

Tailscale is amazing. Phone, Synology, home PC, remote Synology all sharing a wonderful little private network.

yea i was afraid of that. is that also their “excuse” for not allowing bridge mode?

If you use Google for your authentication you can set up two factor authentication. I believe there are many other weaknesses to Quickconnect than just losing your password. You install Tailscale on your Synology and any devices you you want to be able to access each other.

There have been some. Certainly not to the level of Qnap, but the less you expose your nas to the internet, the better. Don’t get me wrong, I love the quickconnect feature but Tailscale is so easy.

Tailscale is actually free unless you need some of the more advanced features like access control for multiple users. I believe it uses WireGuard. WireGuard takes a bit more setup but can do what you need as well. I’ve used both and prefer Tailscale for the simplicity
