How reliable is android’s built-in “always on” VPN feature?
Doh, I only setup my android vpn last week and somehow missed the built in always on option. I’ve been using OpenVPN app and it’s always on feature has been good so far.
Where does it vpn too? What endpoint? Google?
Whatever you set it up to be
Not sure if you are aware, but in Android 7 and especially Android Marshmallow, the android built-in VPN features have been highly upgraded from previous vesions of android.
Openvpn is still not native unfortunately however it can be a seemless experience with Openvpn for Android app installed- it integrates with the Always-on VPN feature OP is referring to.
And it works surprisingly well! automatically updates your DNS to that of your provider to prevent dns leaks. Thats a big deal
To your VPN provider.
Seems pretty minimal. I am using battery saver mode, so the connection drops when the phone sleeps… needs a second or so to reconnect when you wake the phone. No traffic happens when the connection is down. Hasn’t been too annoying yet.
so you don’t get notification from chat like telegram, whatsapp, reddit, and email when your phone it’s in sleep mode ? that doesnt sound usefull
It still periodically connects and checks, but seems less frequent than before. I didn’t see any settings for this so I’m not sure what the intervals are yet.
So in order to have push notifications I should have always on enable
I was assume so, hopefully that doesn’t impact the battery much. Only started playing with Android VPNs myself, sorry I couldn’t be more help.
If I have time I will do some test with my vpnprovider app and openvpn on android and make a post.
Thank you for the info
