Setup: I am running an Apple TV 4k connected to TV via eARC with two Homepod Minis as audio output. I have been using an Apple Airport as WIFI access point connected to the ISP router via Ethernet.
I am unable to add Nord VPN to the ISP provided router/wifi modem.
I just bought a Raspberry pi 4.
Any advice on how to use this pi as a VPN between the router and Apple TV setup?
Would I need to stop using the Apple airport and only use the raspi as the access point connected via Ethernet to router? I have about 10 devices connected via wifi and worried about the homepod minis lagging/out of sync when using them as speakers through appletv. Previously when using the ISP’s router/wifi modem, it did not work well because I don’t think it can handle multiple devices simultaneously.
Can I daisy chain the pi between the ISP router and the Airport if I bought a Ethernet adapter giving the pi an ethernet in and out?
This would have been simpler to setup with a travel router and cheaper. https://youtu.be/oSTA9-bBUIg?si=4sseLOV6AI3V2KIy
The easy way without learning a bunch of Linux networking is to install OpenWRT on the Pi. Use the ethernet port to connect to your router and the Apple TV and HomePods to the Pi’s WiFi. Activate the VPN on the Pi and the traffic from the Apple TV will use the tunnel. You could also use the Airport by connecting the Pi to your router using WiFi and the Airport to the Pi using Ethernet. Activate the VPN on the Pi and the devices connected to Airport will use the tunnel.
You can do this from the command line on the Pi there are tutorials you can find using Google.
In the past I traveled with a Pi and Airport Express so I could use my Apple TV with a VPN back to my house. I replaced that combo with a travel router ( Slate 750), it’s smaller and quicker to get setup.
Keep an eye on the Apple App Store, now that the Apple TV allows for VPNs, Nord should be about to release an app for Apple TV.
I’ll give OpenWRT a go. Thanks for your input.
I am familiar with installing the VPN on a router (unfortunately ISP provided one doesn’t have the capability )
I have a TP-Link extender/router (which could be considered something like a travel router if setup as the access point mode via ethernet) that I used to use, but also unable to install VPN on it.
Trying not to purchase a new router, so I’ll give OpenWRT a shot.
OpenWRT will work it’s what the GLiNet travel routers run.
