If anyone has any suggestions as to preventing this popup from Shark VPN, I’m all ears. If I can’t find a work-around I’ll just cancel.
Hi, there should be no such notifications about updating to Windows 11. We only show a message in-app in the Antivirus page if you’re running a very old version of Windows 10, to update it to a newer version of Win10 via Windows Update.
It might be a bug that is unknown to us, however, to make sure we would need more details and screenshots. Could you provide them to us via email at [email protected]?
I have not seen this on any of my windows 10 PC’s - are you sure it’s Surfshark displaying this message?
You could always try using openvpn instead?
Sounds like the issue is with the AV though. Maybe just cancel the av lol
This popup that you “only show” (HOW OFTEN?) says
“Looks like you need to update Windows”
-and-
“Your current version of Windows 10 doesn’t support our new Antivirus security features.”
So YES - you and the lawyers at your company are correct. There isn’t an “explicit” message about Windows “11.” However, by neglecting to mention which version of Windows 10 is required, IMO this popup is a de facto message inferring customers should update to Windows 11. The popup opens “Windows Settings.” How are you supposed to upgrade to “newer versions” of “Windows 10” from “Windows Setting” while simultaneously ensuring that 11 won’t download either now or in the future? You know the answer to that question for every single one of your customer? These are customers who are fighting off tens, hundreds, thousands, millions of people trying to find out what they’re doing (now and in the future)?
Furthermore, this popup pops up how often? What are its settings in the code? Because i know when i’m not actively using the computer (MB Pro 15 → Bootcamp > Windows) when i “X” the popup window, and touch nothing else, the popup window is back in around 15 minutes. This popup only began maybe 2 weeks after i installed Surfshark. I’m curious what the settings are. You won’t tell me, but that doesn’t mean i’m not curious.
Edit: And your comment “We only show the message in-app in the Antivirus page” is extremely revealing in terms of what you think about this customer. My sides.
It concerns the Surfshark VPN “antivirus” for Surfshark One+
Maybe include a screenshot of the pop up? Would be tremendously helpful because we all are trying to imagine what you are talking about
By design, the pop-up should only be shown once. If it shows up more than once for you, it is a bug and I’ll share it with our developers.
Once you go to Windows settings, you don’t need to update to Windows 11 as well and can just update to the latest version of Windows 10.
If you see an option to upgrade to Windows 11 there, this depends completely on Microsoft and we are unrelated to it.
Ah. I don’t use Surfshark’s AV. There must be an option to change the notifications somewhere but at this point I cannot assist further. I hope you get it resolved, I’ve been very happy with Surfshark’s VPN.
A “popup” is a “bug”?
I mean, props for answering so fast. Or, at all. Most companies don’t and wouldn’t do that. But - a tech company who’s greatest asset is customers’ confidence has bugs?
You don’t say…
Just a note — to my understanding I’m not using Surfshark’s AV either. The popup states that in order for the AV to function, the user must install Windows 11.
And, in slightly creepy fashion, when you click the popup, your systems settings → Windows Updater is opened automatically. So, if you have Surfshark set to open upon launch, you can theoretically go from hitting “Power” on your computer, and at two clicks of a mouse you could be installing Windows 11.
It seems utterly impossible that Microsoft and Surfshark don’t have some “under the table” deal going on here.
And if Surfshark is lying to you about their connections with Microsoft, what else are they willing to lie to you about?
Hold your horses. Maybe its just a new bug. Lets see if anyone else have this issue before jumping to scary conclusions
It’s not a bug, it’s a regular popup that “One+” customers will receive (those with a 2 year subscription, at least) if their “version” of Windows 10 isn’t of some unspecified number. And the popup directs you directly to your Windows Update panel, which — to my mind — is unethical no matter what a company’s relationships/agreements.
Can you post a screenshot?
u/magicfrogz maybe that will make it easier on your end to try to find a solution
Thanks for your proactivity! We are already aware of the specific pop-up and I provided all the info from the Surfshark team in my comments under the post.
