What browser and page did you use for that test?
My thought was that it blocks servers that are close-by, in that case they will not be available in the cache, thus cause need to connect to other server, perhaps far away.
The issue seems to be 100ft damaged TP cable that OP will swap out eventually.
Ping -n 100 Google.com
That’ll do 100pings and the summary will tell you if there’s loss (dropped packets)
chrome, just typed in internet speed test and used that built in feature it has
Give a Firefox a go, and try speedtest.net.
Even better, a different device alltogether.
Well that was interesting. So I had my girlfriend do the test on her computer. We’re both getting slower download speeds than usual, about 500-600mbps (about 300-400mbps less than normal), but our upload speeds are night and day. I’m getting less than 1mbps and she just clocked in at 778mbps.
I ran the speedtest on firefox as well like you asked and got 515mbps download and 0.01mbps upload lmao it seems to be getting worse
Edit: for fun I downloaded the speedtest.net app on my phone and got 600mbps download and 281mbps upload
It seems that the issue with upload speed limited to your computer only.
Can you tell me how the PC with bad upload speed is connected? Wifi or cable? Did you try to update the NIC drivers, install Windows Updates and such?
It’s connected by cable. All NIC drivers are up to date. Currently installing Windows update KB5016688. I’ve been manually scanning for windows updates all week so I’m surprised there’s actually an update available lol
So after the update and restart… Would you believe me if I told you I was getting 900mbps download and 940mbps upload now?
I suggest that you change that cable to a different cable or try Wi-Fi. What cable is it btw? I wanna know length and CAT rating.
That sounds like good speed. Some software issues most likely.
I advice a Malwarebytes check. Other than that… those issues are hard to troubleshoot. I would still check the cable, maybe swap it if issues persist. Other than that, it’s a windows reinstall really.
It’s a CAT6 but the length is 50-100ft (excessively long considering it’s right under my PC but it’s the one they brought when they set it up). However the cable near the router looks slightly… smushed? like it got ran over lol I think I’ll order a new cable, one with a much more reasonable length
Yeah I’ve been troubleshooting issues with my PC for about 2-3 months now and I’m not really sure why all of a sudden it’s been giving me so many issues. It ran fine for the past 2-3 years. A little less than a year ago I changed cases and redid my thermal paste and it was fine for a while ~8 months. I’ve actually done a windows reinstall twice lol. One was a reset through the windows installer and one was an actual clean install.
In the past 2-3 months I’ve had random shut downs, blue screens of death, pressed the power button and got nothing but max RPMs on fan with nothing on screen, truly this has been the best IT learning experience you could ask for lol. I’ve run memtest, I’ve reseated cables, scanned for faulty drivers, updated BIOS, done just about everything. Luckily the worst of the issues have been resolved and this seems to be the last hiccup. I’ve seen a lot of people recommend malwarebytes which I think I’m finally going to go down that route just for peace of mind at this point. I recently downloaded some mining software and started a local node for monero so I’ve been concerned with a possible virus from a bad download even though I have not redownloaded the mining software since the clean windows install. Anyways I’ve run the speed test multiple times while typing this and the speeds are staying where they’re supposed to be so I thank you for taking the time to help me, I really appreciate it
In the mean time, you can try plugging your machine in using your partners cable to see if the issue goes away. If not then you still have an issue.
Get a shorter cable. Now that you tell this to me, I’m quite confident this is the root cause. It’s so long, get some CAT6 that’s shorter.
malwarebytes
It’s good. Okay let me rephrase. It sucks least. Had my issues with it like updates for win being blocked… but yeah. Disabling it helped. I like it the most from all the AV. I know people say built in is enough, but I had a virus that disabled it via registry entry. There you go you know… So yeah MB is alright.
I recently downloaded some mining software and started a local node for monero
The official monero gui package with the miner capability is legit, no virus there. But why mine monero? It’s super bad profitability. You should not do it, unless just for sake of doing it. There are better coins to mine.
If problems persist, change that cable before you reinstall more stuff.
thank you
You’re welcome
Good point, I’ll give it a try when I get home
oh yeah sorry the mining software was different from monero GUI. It was kudominer or something like that. Was actually looking to mine ALGO or at least mine something more efficient and get paid in ALGO. Sorry should have explained that better. BTW my upload speed is back to less than 1mbps lmao but I think at this point I’ll go the malwarebytes route and change this cable and see how that goes. If problem persists then I’m sure I’ll be back for tips from the wise folk in this sub such as yourself
something more efficient and get paid in ALGO
This sounds like NiceHash scam, that is you mine something, they convert it to something else and take 30% for that. Don’t ever mine and convert at the same time, it’s always a ripoff.
kudominer
Often stuff like this has a dev fee, 1-3% or such, that they take. I try to use 0% fee, if I’m mining. Like kawpowminer for example. Official monero gui too, but mining xmr is not profitable at all.
The cable is like… the first suspect for me at least. Do swap it before you do anything else.
