The highest one core is at is 25% everything else is around 10%.
Sorry, what do you mean by tariff? I always assumed tariff was a tax.
Is it possible to use Usenet for free? I tried looking it up, it seems there’s monthly service fees? Thanks
That’s always been my understanding. I was just wondering if I was wrong all these years
SSL doesn’t encrypt the request though right? ISP Logging metadata can still see where you’re going , just not the data itself? (unsure)
Ah, gotcha.
I’m not saying you’re wrong to use it, I’m just wondering if I’m wrong not to, lol.
I’ve used usenet for years. Like since the dialup and ISDN days. I’ve never had an issue not using VPN. I’ve used usenetserver.com for a while now with their SSL connection, but don’t use their VPN.
I use usenet as my primary source because it’s so much faster & torrents with vpn as a secondary means.
Have you tried different servers with your Usenet provider? They typically have a few server locations in different regions so it’s worth it to try all of them to see which works best.
I had the same issue I just went back to torrents
The vpn is your issue. Unless you have a very fast one that’s your bottleneck. I can get 1.15gbos on my 1gbs connection without a vpn and with one I max around 900mbps on my vpn. I only download on my pc though, don’t bother using unraid for it as it’s not needed. I’ll just transfer the file over after it’s done.
I use private internet access and the server you connect to matters. You have to bounce around since some servers get overwhelmed with customers.
Also if you use SSL you really don’t need a vpn. I never used a vpn in the last 15 years and I always use SSL.
try bypassing your vpn and see if that changes anything.
i’m on a gigabit connection and only see around 60MB/s and i have it capped at 80MB/s
i recently ran into something similar (was only getting 10MB/s download), ended up being my ethernet cable. I had never had one go bad on me, but i was only at 100mbps speeds. New cable fixed it.
so its not doing anything useful, its waiting for something. in this case its probably the ssd. it cant handle the random workload being trown at him, add to that the inefficient method of using newsgroups for data and you have your bottleneck.
Google the meaning of tariff.
Who is your usenet provider?
No its not, alot if them are dirt cheap though, 5$ a month, or you can get lifetime passes. The “free” plans allow like 3 downloads daily and no API access so u cant use sonarr or radarr
No. Free providers won’t have very much retention.
I’m fairly confident SSL handshakes are encrypted, but things like requesting the initial website isn’t. That doesn’t really matter though, it’s not illegal to go to a website, with some minor exceptions, but those exceptions the ISP would block you from going in the first place.
It’s not the act of going to a website that your ISP cares about, it’s what you’re doing on their website, and once you’re there you should have SSL encryption so they can’t see what you’re doing anyhow.
If you want an example of this happening right now look up what’s happening with Kiwifarm and the fight they’re in as groups are trying their damnedest to block traffic to their website. I’m not going to go into the legalities of their website or the legalities of ISP’s blocking their website or traffic through them , but it’s a hell of a situation that’s going on. In that case the easiest way to Access their website is through TOR.
Not really any point in using it, unless your ISP or government actively monitors for illicit downloads, which I don’t even think Japan does (I use them as an example because their anti-piracy laws are so ridiculous that the cops actually investigate and go after individuals for file sharing.)
The purpose of a VPN for torrents is because you’re sharing the files back to the public swarm. With Usenet you’re just downloading, not sharing anything, and it’s from a trusted server, so there’s no need, especially if you’re using SSL.
Looking into a bit more just now this post seemed to explain it pretty well.
I sent a help ticket to them. I use Eweka and on my account dashboard it only has 1 server.
Also if you use SSL you really don’t need a vpn
As soon as I saw ‘vpn’ I knew that was their issue. Most Usenet providers supply ssl information, use that and ditch the VPN.
Turning off the VPN it did go up to about 27 MB/s, but still well below what people are saying they get. I am on Eweka and post have stated that they max out their gig connection.
Weirdly when I turned the VPN back on the speeds are now jumping up to 30 MB/s
