Hi I would like to know how I can install Proton Vpn on Arch based Linux. I just migrated from macOS so far everything is great I am just struggling with Proton vpn install
I think the AUR provided a GTK app, or you can use wireguard with configurations imported
It’s on the official docs, read it
Arch Linux is not officially supported at this time. You can try setting up a manual WireGuard or OpenVPN connection by following the appropriate guide below.
WireGuard - https://protonvpn.com/support/wireguard-linux
Proton VPN GTK App is the way to go but it has a crazy amount of dependencies that all need to be installed via AUR.
I don’t like using pacman wrappers, but in this case, `yay` makes life much easier (both to install and upgrade Proton VPN and its deps)
P.S. Congrats for getting off macOS. Apple’s planned obsolescence and lock in strategies are sickening.
yay: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/yay
Proton VPN GTK App: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/proton-vpn-gtk-app
The AUR package can be used to set up ProtonVPN on Arch Linux. So, if you have an AUR helper, run yay -S protonvpn-cli or paru -S protonvpn-cli. Use protonvpn init to set it up after it’s been loaded. Please let me know if you need more help!
Hi could you maybe send me a link I tried but for some reason I cant find it ?
It is not, official docs covers only Ubuntu,Fedora and Debian
Hi thank you very much for the information this will be very helpful, since I really had to try out by myself before but I did not really work out for me, but I am sure with this guide will help me a lot.
Hi now its up and running but I would like to know how do I add a default country and make Proton VPN automatically choose fastest server each time I auto connect or quick connect ? that is the part I still have not figured out. Is there other protocol than only open and wireguard I mean like more secure and obfuscate my internet connection ?
Hi thank you very much yes that was exactly why I migrated away from macOS I am honestly pretty impressed about ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED its blazing fast crazy battery life, I bought it brand new for 1200 dollars. 32 gb ram 1 TB 6 gb graphics card. the mac that comes closets costs 2700 dollars. And I am so happy I stepped off the Apple train. I do own a macbook pro 16 2019 costed me 4300 dollars in 2020 now in 2024 with the latest macOS will more or less be last macOS I can upgrade to. But I only use it for my work as I work as a photographer. But lets see if Linux will not take macOS job. About the Proton vpn app I have a unlimited plan I sadly very disappointed at the vpn app for me its a bit confusing layout vs macOS also I would like to know how to set a default country but always choose the fastest server. so for now I use mullvad. I hope proton will do something for us Linux users. By the way 6 of my friends long time macOS user also just migrated to Linux and also have Proton plans and yes they also complaining about Protons lack of commitment. Before I forgot it but over the last year and half I slowly stopped using apple native apps and used more and more third party like Proton and Brave Zen browser and other software so migrating towards Linux was not that hard for me actually the quite opposite lol
After the recent Python 13 upgrade for Arch the proton gtk app is not working. This happens every time Python is upgraded and I am not able to understand what is being said in the AUR page. Can you please guide me on what is to be done to make this work again. The last time I had to clean build it but I forget how. Can you guide me? This time I will document the steps.
Those packages (the CLI client specifically) has seen many reports of no longer working, probably on account of being unsupported for years. (For the official CLI client that is. I have no idea if a community developed client is still being worked on or not.)
I technically don’t have the permission to share any unofficially supported software here, but since it is open source and actively maintained by the community. I’ll just drop the repo: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/proton-vpn-gtk-app
Yes it does cover, check what it say here How to use Proton VPN on Linux | Proton VPN under “Other ways to use Proton VPN on Linux”
Hi I manged to install proton VPN is up and running, so now comes the next big question how do I choose a default country and make proton quick connect to the fastest server in the specific country ? I now understand my Linux user are unsatisfied with Protons app it is literally horrible compared the macOS version.
Yes,I know . It is there , but Aur and Flatpaks not officially supported by Proton.
I only use GUI app , that is what I thought by officially supported
It actually has more features than macOS tbh.
Well at the least you have links to community projects that are acknowledged by Proton.
