iOS auto connect upon reboot?

Hi everyone, I have a Tailscale vpn set up.

On my iPhone I’ve noticed if my device is turned off, eg battery dies, it seems to turn my vpn off. Is there a way to switch the vpn on during reboot?

I rebooted my phone and Tailscale auto-reconnected

Took a second in the app, but it worked all on it’s own

You could use the recently-added iOS Shortcuts support to ensure that Tailscale is connected every morning. There’s an example about using an automation based on joining a Wi-Fi network at https://tailscale.com/kb/1233/mac-ios-shortcuts/#connect-to-your-tailnet-example, but you can use a different trigger instead, like a time of day.

There are some simple automation triggers in the Shortcuts app. Tailscale also just updated so that there are Shortcut actions available for the Tailscale app.

Maybe you could set an automation in Shortcuts to enable Tailscale when connected to WiFi (btw, this won’t disable Tailscale when you leave a WiFi network).

Hmm I’m not sure then. Every so often I notice my vpn is off and the only thing I can correlate it to is my phone switching off :man_shrugging:t3:

Yeah that’s a great idea! I have a shortcut which runs every night when I get into bed and every morning when I wake up. I’ll have a look, thanks!

Thanks for that! I’ve set up a couple existing automations to include it now😎

If I recall correctly, iOS sometimes resprings (reboots) in the middle of the night when system memory is high. It might be this, but I am not 100% sure. It just so happens I sometimes have to retype my pin in the morning to re-enable Face ID.

So maybe that could be it  just every so often I realise my vpn isn’t on, so I have to switch my vpn back on
