Im going to live in china for about 2 months with some family and I’m planning to get Astrill VPN. All I will be doing is some gaming browsing the internet. Is Astrill VPN good enough for those use cases and how reliable is it? or should I get something like Shadowrocket?
Shadowrocket with a configuration from a provider is 10 times cheaper and better than ASStrill. UU accelerator for gaming
Use UU Booster for gaming, it’s pretty cheap by western standards.
Get a traveller’s eSIM which bypasses the firewall and will never get blocked. 3HK and CUniq will get you like 10-15GB for something like $15 USD? Tiktok doesn’t work on these however since they’re from Hong Kong.
Astrill is good enough but it is very annoying to use on phones especially when connection is shoddy, and you will have to turn it off and on a lot to access local websites and apps
I would get shadowrocket, then have a family member pay with alipay for a subscription. Personally I’ve used flyingbird and ssrdog which have pretty good plans, but there are many other good ones. In my experience they’re way faster and more reliable than astrill.
You can forget gaming online if that’s what you intend with Astril. If you want to game from China to EU/USA then you need to get Ionlife.
In my experience you can’t do any competive gaming with Astrill. Lag is over 500 often. At least you would have a good reason why you suck at the game.
But it’s just not fun.
There are some other Chinese VPNs developed for gaming and gaming only.
For the rest of your needs Astrill is good enough.
How do I find a provider? First time trying to set up something like this. Thanks
Note while sim will get you access, it’s not encrypted, and you still rely on VPN or apps e2e encryption for that
Hm, i’ve used uu a lot this past month, but I feel like it only improves my ping by around 20% oftentimes (ie 200->170), is that what is expected from it or am I using it wrong?
Not in my experience using 5G. Always been fine. Though I haven’t used Astril in awhile.
I usually just turn off vpn when gaming. They’re not blocked in the first place
I can dm you the link to the one I use
What servers are you connecting to and where are they?
It’s fine till I go on the subway.
I play league of legends NA but also other games with servers in america as well
Yeah that’s pretty expected, but the main benefit is less packet loss and jitter. NA is in Chicago, you won’t be getting less than 170ms given Shanghai => LA is already 130ms. This is just a limitation on the speed of light as well as the path of submarine cables.
Best you can do for NA is really around 130ms to LA and Seattle, if you can find games with servers in LA.
No real good choices for western league players for China, especially since JP/TW/SEA are cesspools…
That makes sense, so it makes the connection more stable even if it doesn’t improve ping by much?
