Is it normal for a VPN to occasionally disconnect by itself?

So yeah, as the title goes, my NordVPN loves to disconnect every few hours or most of the time even a few minutes. I remember having a similar issue with a different VPN back then. It’s not a major issue to me, since it’s only disconnecting and not crashing the software. But still kinda annoying.

Note: Issues resolved by changing the vpn protocol into OpenVPN (TCP).

Mine does not do that. It’s constantly on. Maybe contact support for help.

It’s definitely not normal. Once you connect, you should stay connected until you disconnect or end the process manually. The issue itself could be caused either by the software itself, or the setup (network connection errors, conflicting software, etc). What might help here, is to switch the protocols from the settings menu of the nord app (TCP is considered the most stable one), check if there’s nothing interfering with your VPN connection, like firewalls or AV. This, or a network flush might also help.

Check if your internet connection is stable without a VPN if you say that this happened before with some other VPN. And then you can contact Nord’s support.

I have 4 ios devices using NordVPN. I have them all setup for autoconnect “always” I regularly find any one of them has disconnected … and that I have been browsing (for i don’t know how long) without the VPN. It really bugs me because the kill switch is just not reliable.

One of the things i notice is that the disconnect is often associated with the Nord App wanting to update. So in order to reconnect the VPN on the problem device, I need to update the NordVPN app or VPN settings first.

The problem never occurs simultaneously on all devices at once but rather randomly on one of my four devices.

Happens to me on my Macbook.

Without VPN connection is 100% stable.

Will try your solution.

Thanks, mate! Your method works! I haven’t experienced any disconnect at all for over 6 hours so far, and that has never happened before. Not even on my lifetime.

I will keep monitoring if there should be any changes later, but so far I’m loving it!

I’m using windows 10

Glad to know it helped!
