Is there a way to only route qBittorrent through VPN and have the rest of my PC use "normal" Internet?

Hi.

I have MullvadVPN and in qBittorrent I enabled the “Mullvad VPN”-interface (I only set it to MullvadVPN, then restarted qBitTorrent. Nothing seems different tbh).

Is there a way I can have qbittorrent use the VPN while having the rest of my PC use my normal internet?

This is why people do the container that is qbt + vpn, the use the webui. May seem annoying but once it’s done it’s a dream.

Split tunneling is one option. Often there are problems with this. Plex seldom works right with it.

You can either use Docker containers or Virtual Machines.

binhex/arch-qbittorrentvpn is a commonly used container.

You can also use VirtualBox in Windows and add an OS VM then install your VPN client and qBit on the VM.

That’s called split tunnel. Not reliable on Mac with PIA, its at least worth a try.

Yes, run qBittorrent and gluetun docker containers and route qBittorrent traffic through gluetun.

I use this guide with qBittorrent and the Wireguard client for split tunneling Mullvad on Windows. All other applications bypass the VPN by default, and qBittorrent won’t leak my IP since the interface is bound.

IMO, a dedicated container and web UI is absolutely overkill for regular usage; save that for a homelab or seedbox.

If Mullvad supports SOCKS5 proxies, you could use that in qBitTorrent. I do that with my VPN. Split tunneling might be a better solution though.

Mullvad can do split tunneling in the options.

IMO, the best way to do this is in a VM. Drop all packets from the VM’s IP that are not heading to the VPN at the router. That way you know you’re not leaking.

Where could I read up on how to set this up?

I’m using NordVPN right now with split tunnel activated. I’ve never used split tunneling on my Android phone before. I’ll have to look into it.

Once I found out about SOCKS5, I jumped on it. I love it.

I agree, seldom is an exaggeration but there are many people that have problems with it judging by the posts on forums.

I haven’t tried it in years.

How does that matter for the torrent? Will it be harder to seed or something?

I’m one of them. It’s just when the kill switch is enabled i can’t get the split tunneling to work so im trying to find a solution so im expressing my frustration now lol

That’s odd that they told you that. I’ve been using split torrent for more than six months, although I don’t remember exactly when I started using it.

The solution is a VM of one type or another.
