I’ve read about how unsafe PPTP is, but is it okay to use it one time to download something and then disconnect after?

By default, PPTP is not encrypted, therefore it is not a safe protocol to use to ensure your data is not spied upon/manipulated during transport or via edge.

no it’s not safe, that’s it

Sorry for the stupid question, a game that i played requires a vpn to download the patch. So i thought maybe using free PPTP is okay to just download the patch and then disconnect it after and never use it again

During transport means if i actually do something right? So what if i just use it to download a patch of a game and not anything else? Can they still spy my other information?

Honestly man, that’s about as safe as free heroin on the street. PPTP is way past insecure and obsolete and then getting a free one at that is asking for trouble. Also why would you need a VPN to download the patch? What kind of game would ask you to use a VPN to patch it?

Oh its not like they ask to use vpn, its just that the download speed is too slow if i dont use em. So, can it still get spied even if i only use it to download the patch and not do anything else like browsing and stuff?

In theory yes, but realistically no. If you are only connecting to get that file, then someone can see the file you are downloading. If… someone was trying to watch what you are doing. Its no big deal.
If you are downloading from an https site then that traffic will be encrypted, so they would not see that even. I’d just be more concerned about the need to use a VPN at all, seems a little strange. By connecting to them, you are forming a network connection between your machine and theirs. That to me is the bigger concern.

I think you may want to see why your dl speed is slow normally but faster with a VPN. You could be getting throttled or there’s a bottleneck somewhere.

With the free VPN, they can spy on you beyond you downloading the patch. A VPN is a tunnel from one network to another basically. In this case I am less worried about your ISP or someone else breaking the weak VPN encryption, but more about the people on the other end, by that I mean the hosts. The hosts can do shady things beyond just logging/spying on your traffic.

Its because of server stuff, somehow our ISP has a really bad time downloading a patch.
I see, so that means they can only see what im trying to do with their network then?
Im really new to the vpn. In my head, i thought they cannot check anything else if i dont do anything with their network on that particular stuff.
My option was between this or those ‘free vpn’ app like Aman vpn/etc that u have to install to your own pc, and im not sure thats better than a pptn even with the insecure that if im being honest i still dont understand.

How big is the patch?

Like 5 gigs. The game is path of exile, downloaded the patch with the client
