Kasperky reducing internet speed by 60%. As soon as I close it it's back to normal

Kasperky is cutting my internet connection by almost 60%. As soon as I close Kasperky my connection speed is back to normal. This is a complete deal breaker for me as I frequently download large files that require my full internet connection. Incidentally, when I download large files is also the time when I need my anti-virus the most so I can’t really turn if off.

I’ve been using BitDefender until last week (when my license expired) and I’ve never had this issue, my internet was the exact same speed. I’ve also done tests with with McAfee, Norton and Avira and none of them have this issue.

This is 100% Kasperky’s fault since I’ve even installed it on my computer at work and I got the exact same results.

I’ve been turning off the protection features 1 by 1 in Kasperky to see if it’s a particular feature that reduces my speed and I’ve got no definitive change. I’ve also turned ALL the features off and I’ve got no definitive increase. Also from my understanding BitDifender has more or less same features and I was running mine with all the protection features on with no decrease at all.

I’ve went back and forth with tech support and long story short: they basically did nothing and refused to give me a refund and now I’m stuck with this trash anti-virus.

I’m not trying to plug anything but I’ve been using BitDefender for 5 years and I’ve only changed last week (from sheer stupidity), mostly because I just wanted to try something else too.

You really should stay away from this one since it’s something fishy (also if you have any suggestion please help).

PS: for those that might say that 400mbps connection is plenty I’m paying a lot of money for my connection cause it is crucial for me, so having it reduced by 60% by some shitty anti-virus just isn’t acceptable. (I also have the same results with downloading files it’s not just this particular website)

There is little reason to use a third party AV these days. Windows Defender does a great job with minimal impact.

I’d be interested in why you want to use BitDefender or Kaspersky at all. What do they offer that you want?

I wouldn’t use any 3rd party anti virus.

Windows defender is good enough and doesn’t do this crap

I wouldn’t recommend spending on any antivirus software, get Malwarebytes premium + defender and you’re set

Kaspersky was all the rage 10 years ago, but I wouldn’t recommend it anymore, or any other 3rd party antivirus for that matter.

run awcleaner and malwarebytes instead of kaspersky because windows defender clears 95% of shit you do while rest 5% should be done by adwcleaner and malwarebytes

times passed when you had benefit from running antivirus stuff like eset mcafee norton kaspersky etc.,now windows defender does 95% shit they all do while being free

Windows Defender has you covered. Malwarebytes, Premium or not, can help with what Defender doesn’t pick up, but Defender still grabs quite a bit now.

Check whether your “secure connection” is turned on. It’s a built in VPN that would slow down your speeds

If im not mistaken, unless you are doing something shady/ visiting unsafe sites, there is no need for an external cyber defence system. (Or if you have really important shit on your pc thats sensitive info).

Generaly, windows defender does a great job and kapersky just limits you with its firewall rules which slow things down.

Peace

Norten av does the same

Russians hacking you

Well, considering Kaspersky is shite software that nobody should be running…

When I worked for a nonprofit, part of our state contract renewal in 2016 or 2017 required us to change from Kaspersky to something not owned and operated out of Russia. (Please don’t get me started on conspiracy theories here, this was handed down from the state and we had no input.) My boss was looking for a reason to switch our network off of Kaspersky that could be presented to (nontechnical) management to justify the cost, and this declaration from the state was it. We changed to BitDefender within a couple of months, and our resource load and network stability was greatly improved, especially in the outer counties (we served ten counties, most of which had barely-better-than-dialup internet access – yay rural Kentucky).

That said, as others have mentioned in this thread, for MOST home use purposes, the only AV anyone needs these days is Windows Defender. It’s come a long way since the Win7 days where it was a joke, and it’s on par with decent professional AV programs. Bonus: it’s free and comes preinstalled with Windows.

The free version of Malwarebytes works well with Windows Defender.

Remove that Russian junk and just use defender

Anti-Virus software tends to slow down connection-speed in general.
There are few AVs that I know of that DON‘T slow down. It’s ridiculous.

Maybe it using the channel, downloading or uploading something that why your speed decrease.

Tbh, if you used BitDefender before get that back. It’s a bit aggressive, but probably the best Anti-Virus there is.

Otherwise just use Windows Defender, an ad-blocker (you can whitelist websites) and be careful (when you download stuff scan it with Virustotal).

I personally either use free Avira or Windows Defender. Both aren’t demanding for your system. I’d uninstall everything from Avira except the Anti-Virus though. :stuck_out_tongue:

If you are downloading stuff from trusted sources you never need anything else but windows defender (this is valid only for windows 10 users). You may find trusted sources even for torrents and stuff like that. Most torrent trackers have their owns staff (sometimes paid) to upload torrents and they always verify the stuff that’s being uploaded on their tracker by the uploader and sometimes by internal virus scans. Most of those torrent trackers require invitation to join and those invitation can be send by staff members and other members with certain rank (many times you have to pay for that rank and have a finite number of invitation to send each month).

ESET does not have this issue. I’ve used it with no problems for several years.

Your cpu can’t handle the speed with the overhead of Kaspersky reading the data being downloaded.
