Laptops from US to Brazil

Also false declaration of value when sending stuff through regular mail will too incur in an additional penalty of 50%. Back in the day people would send a laptop through mail and declare a 100 USD value (example).

Package gets picked up for inspection in the sorting center, sent through the x-ray machine, auditor guy see what is clearly worth more than 100 USD. He has the autonomy to ignore the declaration of value and calculate taxes based on market value of that item.

I used to joke that my gf had the only $300 teddy bear in existence! I sent it to her not knowing the laws and when all was said and done, that fucking Build a Bear cost me a total of just over $300…

Yes this is the answer. We have same situation about crazy taxes in Turkey too, and the only solution is finding a local partner to locally procure required hardware.

This is a good solution too.

Another similar solution: a friend of mine worked for a company where the company itself would buy Macs from the Brazilian online Apple Store with company credit card and send directly to the contractor’s house. Then they enrolled the machine in their MDM.

I’ve muled USB keys into Brazil before lol

taxes on electronic goods in Brazil are absolutely insane. Anything you buy elsewhere could be more than double the cost in Brazil.

i mean it’s kinda a sysadmin question. Been down the same road trying to get equipment into Canada when CDW Canada didn’t carry the products needed.

Not sure why you got downvoted because it’s true. My company had had to abandon so many laptops in Brazil due to the customs process. Unlike Mexico, they don’t ship them back so they are essentially stolen.

That bear would be forever sitting in customs…
