LPT: You can set up a free VPN server on your router to watch Netflix as if you are at home

Most home routers have a built-in VPN server which you can enable. This allows you to connect to your home network from anywhere and use services like Netflix as if you were at home. This will also bypass the requirement to check in from your home network once a month when it is implemented. Because it’s using a residential IP and not a data center like a commercial VPN, Netflix cannot detect it.

Here are instructions for the most popular router brands:

Asus: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1008713/

TP-Link: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1544/

To connect to the server you will need to download the OpenVPN client on your phone/laptop:

One thing to keep in mind is that the speed of the VPN will be limited by the upload speed of your home network. Most cable internet connections have very limited upload speed, but it should be enough to stream video. If you have a fiber connection it will be much faster.

Good tip for those landlubbers who haven’t chosen to cancel Netflix and sail the seas

If you have to go through this process… just cancel your sub…. Netflix was supposed to be easy. If it can’t be easy, just go free.

Cancel your Netflix accounts people, or other services will follow suit.

My concern is how Netflix is implementing this, most home internet connections have IPs dynamically assigned which ~ rules out IP based solutions. They have said WiFi explicitly which if exactly true (and not some security/ obscurity scenario) means it’s probably SSID/ MAC based. This potentially means if you have a wired connection to the client/ TV and no wireless connectivity - you still won’t be able to watch.

No sorry, we all need to cancel otherwise every other platform will do the exact same thing. We are already back to where we were with cable, with every single network and channel having their own streaming service. If we want things to get better, it’s time to hold the line.

This idea also won’t work on Roku’s, and would mean you would need to setup VPN clients on all your family member’s devices, and those people who have tiered bandwidth limits will be completely screwed.

LPT: cancel your Netflix subscription

Was looking into this. With fiber internet I can route it through my internet for my parents and not feel a thing

If you do this please make sure it’s implemented as secure as possible. Exposing your network to the internet invites a lot of risk.

too much trouble for a problem created by netflix. pirating is easier. they played themselves.

Hey question. I have Xfinity and they have me using their white router since I’m using fiber (which is surprisingly slow). Can I get another router that will be compatible or do I absolutely have to use theirs like they’re telling me??

Yeah! AMPLIFI Ailen makes this super easy. Turn on in-app, enter 2FA code into AMPLIFI VPN app, boom done.

Get a firewalla It’s a VPN, adblocking, security box from the heavens.

Ain’t nobody got time for that

Don’t think this is possible for any ISP that uses CNAT though

Not that I’m exactly a fan of Netflix policies, but is this an “Unethical Life Pro Tip?”

Just cancel Netflix.

It literally easier to just pirate the content.

Edit : if I create something that can better your life or entertain you, and you not in a financial position to pay for it. Fucking take it. Pirate my work! I love you. Have a happy life!

  1. I don’t have public IP
  2. I don’t have a VPN server supported router
  3. I don’t have any subscription service especially Netflix.
