LPT: You can set up a free VPN server on your router to watch Netflix as if you are at home

I mean. If you’re going the length of setting up a VPN server you might as well save more money and ditch Netflix for a personal Plex server. You shouldn’t have to bend over backwards because a companies policy doesn’t make sense.

Netflix detects proxies and VPN

It’s not going to work. Netflix can detect VPNs.

Could you access like a home media server and stuff like that this way?

First real life pro tip I’ve ever read…

Does this actually work? I’m not tech savvy at all either

Thanks for the links to all the resources. Setting up a home VPN has uses beyond just Netflix. It’s a way to get around any variable georestrictions and the like that you may happen to encounter when travelling.

Can I use this to change the country, to somewhere like Turkey?

This will be patched most likely

Im very ignorant with this stuff and I’m not quite sure I understand. If I do this on my home router, how does that help me when I’m away from home for weeks at a time? Wouldn’t it still recognize that the ip still isn’t the same? Is there risk that it suddenly assumes I live where ever I’m staying and lock that in as my home?

I don’t really think it’s a good idea to suggest this to people who are not IT profesionals (or at least tech-savvy). The people who are able to set up a custom VPN already know about the possibility, and anyone else is just going to struggle a lot and encouter a lot of troubles they won’t be able to troubleshoot, or even worse, expose their home network to the Internet in an insecure way.

Also, the NAT is relatively prevalent and will stop many people from being able to do this in the first place.

I haven’t hit the bays since I was a wee lad, where does one learn to get started now?

Yeah, at this point, pirating is just easier.

This tip is a straight up lie. A straight up 100% lie.

Your router does not determine your outgoing IP address. The only way to get another IP is if you route through another server somewhere else. You can’t just do some wizardy in your internal network and get it to work.

While your sentiment is understandable, doing this isn’t hard, and imo less tiresome than pirating all the content you want to watch. And cheaper than paying for all the content individually.

In short, I think it’s a great solution and I would choose it over canceling

or set up your VPN once and you have a fix for every other service

Why? Because they want you to pay 10 USD per household per month? Scandalous indeed…

Maybe if everyone paid for their Netflix accounts, Netflix would have more money to buy programming.

Unless you just change your friends or families router to same ssid

it’s IP based. they’ve taken into consideration the support cost of dealing with dynamic IPs
