MEGA VPN review or opinions

Was curious if anyone has any review of the VPN now offered by MEGA. It’s included in all subscription based accounts but I haven’t really seen anyone talking about this one in particular. NordVPN has an ‘early Black Friday’ sale & considering that one also. Open to any opinion one may have on quality of different services. Thanks!

it basicly logs everything and hands everything over see prior posts just put “mega vpn” at the top in the search.

I just did that search and only found a couple of brief comments, one of them from you, with vague claims about logging that flatly contradict what the company currently says on its website. Are you able to offer any better information?

Read the privacy policy , look in my comment history it linked the old vpn only privacy policy with archive org you will find it then , there they claim them self they log everything , since then they consolidated the policy to make it harder to read them

They also clearly still state that they don’t log browser habits and dns

But they don’t say that they don’t log ips and stuff even in their marketing fluf

Brought to you by our friend Chatgpt after digesting the Policy:

Based on my legal analysis of Mega Limited’s policy, they do collect and retain certain types of logs, even though their encryption model prevents them from accessing the content of user files and chats. Here’s a breakdown of what they log:

1. Files and Chats

• They claim zero-knowledge encryption, meaning they do not store your files or chat content in an unencrypted form.

• They do not store voice or video chat content but do store encrypted text chat blobs.

2. Metadata They Log

Although the contents of files and chats are encrypted, they do collect metadata. Specifically, they log:

Device Information: Unique device ID, browser type, device type, and OS.

IP Addresses: Logged when you log in, upload files, access files, and use their API or VPN.

Timestamps: Login times, chat initiation times, chat durations, and moderation activity.

File Metadata: File sizes, versioning order, parent-child file relationships.

Chat Metadata: Contact email addresses, chat commencement times, duration, and participants (stored unencrypted).

Transaction Records: If using paid services, they retain payment records.

3. Retention and Law Enforcement Disclosure

• They may retain files and chats after account suspension or termination if they believe it’s necessary for “evidential purposes” or law enforcement requests.

• They explicitly state that they may disclose data (including encrypted data) to law enforcement or third partieswhen required by law.

• Account Data is retained for 12 months after account termination, or longer if required for legal compliance.

4. Usage Data and Cookies

• They collect Usage Data (system logs, event timestamps).

• They share aggregated, anonymized usage data with advertisers but claim not to sell personal data.

• They log VPN bandwidth usage.

Conclusion: Do They Keep Logs?

Yes, Mega keeps logs of metadata related to file interactions, account activity, and IP addresses.

While they do not store the content of files or chat messages in an unencrypted format, the metadata they log can still be used to analyze user activity. Moreover, they explicitly state they may share data with law enforcement if required.

I did read the (current) privacy policy, and couldn’t find anything alarming. But maybe you’re right that they’re covering things up.

Basicly they removed the vpn only privacy policy and this counts now for all services.

they simply say there they may log everything for all services.
