Mullvad kills internet speed

My ISP is Comcast (1.2 gbps) and I’m using Asus routers. I using an ethernet connection & the Comcast connection is hard wired.

I’ve noticed that using the VPN cuts my internet speed by half. Can you tell me what your experience is regarding this? I’ve contacted support and sent them the logs they’ve asked for. But they didn’t respond after I sent them.

That’s to be expected with any vpn service. All the routing that takes place impacts the spped and/or latency.

Have you tried other servers? I was on a gig connection and was getting about 850 Mbps on Mullvad.

Check different servers, but when you will connect on openvpn or wireguard your inet speed will decrease cause those protocols are encrypting the traffic

Try enabling IPV6, I was having so much trouble connecting to sites, having slow speeds, etc. but enabling IPV6 seemed to help.

Have you played around with your settings?

Choose wireguard over OpenVPN. Having things like obfuscation, double-hop, quantum-resistant tunnel, or DAITA enabled can slow down your speeds.

Are you connecting to the closest server from your physical location?

Have you tried different server providers?

Before, I found that Tzulo provided me with the fastest connection with the lowest latency - compared to other Mullvad server providers in the same city. This can and has changed overtime so I check once a blue moon.

Are you sure Comcast’s isn’t throttling because you’re using a VPN? UDP to be exact. Some isps will throttle if there DPI detects a vpn.

yep, sometimes you luck out and it has little effect on your speed, but, most of the time it does, and cutting speeds in half is pretty typical

If I’ve connected my Asus router via Wireguard, do I need to use Mullvad at all? Or is that duplicating the VPN service? BTW, the router is getting nearly 1gbps speed.

Do you mean you’re using wireguard client or server on your Asus router?

If you’re using a wireguard client (meaning you’re using it to connect to a server somewhere), then you need Mullvad.

If you’re using it as a server (meaning from outside your home you’re using it to allow other clients to connect to a server within your home network), then you don’t need Mullvad.

I’m by no means an expert on this. I get the vast majority of my knowledge from the Asus Wireless sub in SNBForums.com. It’s a fantastic resource.

Literally has nothing to do with my comment. Did I say blocks? Or throttles? Or can you just not read? Trying to see the reason for the reply and how what you said still really has anything to do with the fact that it’s very much so possible that Comcast THROTTLES vpn usage. Many actually do. And yes for MILLIONS of people. A lot of times it’s put in the T and S.
