Not using a VPN but this shows every time I try to send a text

Like the title says, I’m not using a VPN, I’ve tried on 2 seperate connections and still get it every time I try to text and it doesn’t send the text

Both wifi’s tried so far are public, Costco and Tim Hortons, checked both and neither have any proxy or VPN involved, will try my home wifi when I get home, but public wifi has always worked before

Been using textnow for years now and I’m always on the nearest public wifi and have never had a problem til today

Did an update change things to specifically ban public wifi? kinda defeats the purpose of having a wifi only number if I’m not allowed to use the wifi

Maybe Costco and Tim Hortons are using a DNS resolver like 1.1.1.1. which you would never see unless you tested it while connected.

I would chat with them (TN) on FB messenger (you can save conversation) and ask about public wifi… I was shut off for VPN usage (I think, they refused to tell me other than telling me to read TOS) I have never used a VPN but I do use public wifi when available. I filed an appeal and service reinstated, but have no clue when or if it will happen again.

The ad probably pops up every time you switch to a different ip address. (Honestly the thing that takes me off is they want to charge $27+ for they’re services but I pay $20 for for actual cell service when NET10 with more customer service just slightly better than TextNow why would I want to pay more for a downgrade even with the gimmicks.

Regardless, using a VPN is technically against their ToS because what they’re worried about is you blocking ads and they do warm They can delete or limit your account “for whatever reason or no reason” I’ve used Adaway with no problem because it only prevents ads from loading but all the action Is done at the device. Not a third party. rethink is also another option that people use But unlike Adaway it also uses vpn services has a proxy and/or block apps, IPs and ports.

They’re probably looking for anything shady, like rotating IP addresses, locations, etc

I give the app only the needed permissions to be functional.

Update: home wifi works, still pointless to keep on using this number if it won’t work on public wifi, anyone know any other similar apps that do?

Buy a sim in the app for $5.

Update: textnow once again works normally, I have no idea if any of the advice worked or if the app had wtvr bs update it got rolled back, thank you to all who offered support and technical advice

Same thing is happening to me now

Same here i’m not using a vpn. I changed my dns to cloudfare but now have to wait an hour for the vpn thing to turn off. you should still get incoming texts. u just cant make calls outgoing or texts outgoing till the hour passes. It may reset the counter to 1hr again if u try to use the text or call b4 it expires i don’t know if it does but it might. I’ve had this happen b4 it’s some weird glitch. Personally I think its done intentionally to try to get you to pay for their upgrade to premium. I once paid for the security 2 factor codes to work but it didn’t work. Textnow gave no refund told me i had to get it from google and they refused to issue one even though it didn’t work as they would have lost the commission too. I’m sure the revenue from not issuing refunds for paid services that don’t work adds up to a lot of money they don’t want to lose. Anyway, regardless of the reason paranoia notwithstanding there’s little incentive for me to waste money on something that might not even work after trying the 2fa thing twice and at least a year apart and with a support team that can’t even turn the block off once it’s triggered even if it’s not users fault.

Why aren’t you using ad blocking on your phone? I do, and I don’t get any of that text now ads. You need to learn about that.

Not sure but I’ve been on both these wifis daily for over a year, never had a problem before

Adaway is a VPN or root ad blocker.
Unless you are rooted, it won’t be acceptable to Textnow.

Do you think changing app permissions will help? Which permissions should I disallow?

I started having this problem just barley today. But it’s my home wifi and there is no VPN…

paying for anything also defeats the purpose of it ngl

Seems like the IP addresses you were using were erroneously flagged as VPN’s by textnow and they corrected the issue.

All I did was going to the support chat asking to speak to a person, gave up on it about a half hour later, checked it later and saw them basically tell me nothing more than read the terms and conditions, changed my play store review to one star and just waited it out, works normal again now

Simply not worth it, I have an adblock browser app and its all I need, I have a number of phone games where ads are viewed for rewards and the phone wide ad blocker I used to use got in the way of those, textnow ads rarely come up and if they last longer than 3 seconds before offering an X its easy enough to just close and reopen the app

Well, it’ll be interesting to see what happens when you get home and connect to your own Wi-Fi.

I keep creates a virtual VPN or VVPN But it’s not an actual VPN service so text now can’t detect that at least from my experience as I have been using it for years. You should be able to use a VPN so long as you’re not switching countries and whatnot or showing classic signs of circumventing their service restrictions.
