PC crashed, now express vpn wont run or uninstall. .

Hey everyone, I’m hoping someone can help me out here since I have no clue what to do now. My PC bluescreen and restarted and since then EVPN wont connect and asks for repairs, which didn’t work. I tried uninstalling it and it wouldn’t because it kept saying it was connected and to reboot the PC, which didn’t work. I hard deleted everything express VPN, folders and registry and its even gone from my apps. But it still wont uninstall. When i click on the install file it just gives me the option to repair or uninstall, the later of which gives me the same error “disconnect vpn then try again”. . . I’m at my wits end with this thing.

Any insights from people more knowledgeable than me on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

try using a powerful uninstaller like Revo

That’s exactly where I’m at. So you were saying I have to go to task manager to close it down? After the uninstall I can do a fresh install and it should work fine?

For anyone else that has this issue and comes across this thread, what worked for me was re-downloading the installer from Express VPN website, restarting my PC, then closing all of the running Express VPN in task manager.

Once they’re all ended, I disconnected my PC from the internet and managed to get a fresh install that fixed it. You may have to hit proceed anyway if it still thinks the VPN is connected, I’m not sure if it worked because I needed an update, but it may be worth a shot if you’re reading this. Good luck.

Late to the thread, but I was having the same problem.

It ended up being that I was missing the .NET framework and the installer wasn’t installing it for some reason.

Windows Event Viewer was showing me this when ExpressVpn failed to open after install:

Application: ExpressVPN.VpnService.exe
Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\ExpressVPN\services\ExpressVPN.VpnService.exe
Message: You must install or update .NET to run this application.

App: C:\Program Files (x86)\ExpressVPN\services\ExpressVPN.VpnService.exe
Architecture: x64
Framework: 'Microsoft.NETCore.App', version '6.0.0' (x64)
.NET location: C:\Program Files\dotnet\

The following frameworks were found:
  7.0.0 at [C:\Program Files\dotnet\shared\Microsoft.NETCore.App]

This is what I did to fix it:

Uninstall Express VPN

Install the .NET Desktop Runtime v6

Re-install Express VPN

  • Restart your PC for good measure

If the install still fails, re-run the installer as administrator and re-attempt repairing. With the correct version of the .NET framework installed it should run again

Yeh I tried the Microsoft one and still didn’t work haha….eventually I managed it. For some reason it was still running in task manager. Every time I closed it in TM it instantly re appeared and that’s what was stopping the uninstall and what made the installer think it was still installed. Took some quick mouse skills to quickly end all processes of it and then clicking try again on the uninstalled before it managed to “start” up again… Never seen something like it before.

Yeh but it keeps starting itself up in task manager almost instantly after you end it. So you need to quickly click on each express vpn thing in TM and hit delete really quick, then hit try again really quick in the uninstaller before it manages to start again. It took me a few tries but that’s the only way I managed it.

It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of concerns over privacy and the Open Web.

Man, feels good to know I’m not the only one with this issue!

The odd part is that somehow, I managed to get it supposedly “uninstalled”–it doesn’t even appear in my Add or Remove Programs list anymore–yet it’s still installed in reality! As in, when I search ExpressVPN, the App still exists and I can open it, all for it to show the same prompt saying it can’t work etc… so now I can’t even uninstall again cause my computer thinks it’s gone while it’s still there.

Thank you, you’re the best! Gave it a few tries and it finally uninstalled!
