They banned an article (发哨子的人）about a director of emergency department yesterday. This morning someone converted the whole article into 火星文(literally Mars’ language, a variant of Chinese popular in early 2000). The title became發哨孓啲亾. No problem to read, but hard to be scanned. Funny, smart, but sad.

People keep saying coronavirus and wuhan is censored on wechat and stiff but ive been talking to my wife who’s in china since late Jan about the coronavirus. And we use wechat text almost exclusively due to the time difference.
Also not sure how you can quarantine 10% of the world’s population and have army of drones and government workers telling everyone to watch out for the coronavirus to prevent its spread and at the same time censor the exact thing youre trying to prevent.

This article seems to come from a perspective that ignores how beneficial this censorship is to an authoritarian government or any entity seeking to hold power.
Controlling the narrative, making freedom of thought and the spread of ideas are all part and parcel of control. If people can’t talk about dissension, overthrow or protest, then there can’t be any.
It’s a testament to human drive for truth and justice that they are getting creative.
I’m chinese and I’ve never seen people refer to VPN as pho. It also doesn’t make sense in a mandarin context. It’s just VPN or ladder.
This article just shows the author does not have any experience with Chinese social media or Chinese language before… These are just very usual slangs that people use and you are saying they are used to beat the censorship?

You can see this happening right here on Reddit too, when certain subreddits can say and do certain things which will get other ones banned.

Perfect example for as to why building a word/term filter is pointless. It can only ever work if the person programming the filter has a higher sum of creativity and forward-thinking than the entire user base combined. Have fun trying to fulfill that condition.
