What’s the usecase if you’re in the US? I get what a VPN is for but what is the advantage of using one on your appleTV if you’re in the US and have access to the main streaming services?
Does the native Proton VPN app on Apple TV offer a free subscription? If so what are the limitations?
I just used this to access US Netflix from Canada. It worked, but I didn’t try to play anything.

Netflix’s account sharing doesn’t work well with Apple TV’s at all. You’ll be fine. At most it will display and error before the start of a video, all you have to do is press play again and it will work. Even on Android TV the account sharing triggers aren’t all that refined. I beleive they pretty much ignore you until you log in on a new device at a different location at the same time. If you stay logged in on your TV box and use a VPN to later change locations then you’ll be fine.
I had NordVPN and have had no issues using my sister’s Netflix when the VPN is on and set to places like Albania (for when I’m watching YouTube as Albania has no ads).
I use it to block ads on YouTube.
There are a number of countries that do not have ads on YouTube videos, so connecting to one of their servers does the trick.
I guess you can get cheaper Netflix but I guess maybe you can do that without vpn. This will allow you to get broader access of shows tho especially Asian shows.
I checked the website, and it appears you need a paid ProtonVPN account to install on Apple TV.
I am not sure if you can use the free version and Airplay content.
No, you need a Proton VPN Plus subscription to use it on Apple TV. Signing in to the app without a subscription prompts you to subscribe to either the monthly plan or the annual plan.
Right on. With Apple TV and Android TV, the account sharing checks are not that strict. If you stay signed in and use a VPN to change your location later, it usually works fine. For tips, check out r/NetflixByProxy.

I just installed it on my Apple TV and it did not block any ads in YouTube at all. So worthless.
