Proton VPN on Linux is driving me crazy

Since the last couple of months Proton has been asking me for passwords when trying to connect to a server about 85% of the time.

At first I would have to close the app and start it up again, just so that it would stop trying to connect to that server and requesting the password. The starting up process is really slow as well. And then I’d have to try again and repeat the whole process multiple times before it would connect.

Now I’m using the cli and I can at least interrupt the connection to try again without having to restart when it asks for a password. Still it takes me around 10 minutes to get it to work every time.

Does anyone have a solution for this, Proton is great I love the company and what it stands for, but this is making me want to switch.

Yup, using Proton VPN on Linux has been a very disappointing experience. This will be my last month as a paying customer. It’s a shame too, because I agree with your last statement.

I’ve just switched to Mullvad at this point for a VPN, still use the email service, but at this point that’s about it.

I wouldnt use their app. Just use Wireguard or openvpn

Protonvpn on linux is unusable. The best thing to do is to download wireguard profiles and use them manually.
It’s less convenient, and you won’t have most of protonvpn features but it’s your only solution.

I use Protonvpn-cli everyday and never have a problem. I agree the app is worthless on Linux.

I had this problem on arch. Solution for me was to install the network-manager-applet package. Package name is the same on RPM-based distros and I think network-manager-gnome provides it on debian-based distros. Hope it helps!

I’m using Manjaro and ProtonVPN with no issues.

Do your self a favor and just download the Wireguard profiles…

I was having the issue on the message a while ago, using endeavour os, for what I understood when fixing it was that as endeavour didn’t have preisntalled some stuff like libraries from the network manager and some wireguard and openvpn packages (saw a video about it, don’t fully remember) it wasn’t able to connect to openvpn, so I downloaded those packages and restarted, then it worked all fine, I can confirm I am currently able to run protonvpn through openvpn files, cli and app

I don’t believe I had the scenario of being constantly requested for the password tho :frowning: just first time I think

Hope it gets solved

Just use the Wireguard version it’s solid and stable I use it on my headless server

I had nothing but issues really but their support was really good and resolving my issues. They mentioned a new app version that would improve the Linux experience I think

u/yagonia I had recently same experience with ProtonVPN using openvpn too. I switched to WireGuard yesterday, and it seems to work seamlessy since then. Just download wireguard config and import it into the NetworkManager.

I forgot to mention. This happens both on Manjaro and Mint.

I have issues with the v3 cli as well. When I connect, it sits there forever. I have to ctrl c to close.

I do not want a desktop app as I use the cli more often than the desktop, and in most cases do not even install a desktop.

It’d be nice if they fixed the cli version to actually work.

I use the old Linux desktop app. It’s not very good, but all we have an Arch Linux. But I found I only got the password request on some servers, sometimes. Changing to another server seemed to fix it. Proton hates Linux (probably getting backhanders from Microsoft)

Linux is best OS ever tho

linux is horrific with VPNs. Cyberghost use left me with no WIFI connection and many hours of attempted fixes to sort. Ive never gone back to Linux because of the VPN issues. :frowning:

I was using Kubuntu with no issues with protonvpn but when i converted my old laptop to Parrot i ran into the same issues you had.

This mostly fixed my issues, I had to start using the cli version but it will connect and not ask for secrets or a password anymore

edit: specifically the gnome-keyring solution

This happens to me every time the kernel updates, after I restart the PC it’s fine. (Manjaro)
