So I am testing out ProtonVPN and Nord at the moment. Looking to make a switch to one from my current provider. While on my home WiFi I noticed that I cant cast YouTube etc. To my TV or nivida shield while using proton but I am able to with nord. Can you explain why this is?
Chromecast work on your own private network, which ordinarily should not go through a VPN, since it is - by definition - private.
The ProtonVPN Android client correctly does not interfere with traffic on your own local network. I can cast quite happily from my phone connected to ProtonVPN. This is desired behaviour.
It sounds as if you aren’t using the official client, or have configured something incorrectly.
When you’re using a VPN, I would not think you should be able to Cast anything on your home network. After all, the point of a VPN is to route all your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel between your device and the VPN server. As far as I know, Casting only works when a connection can be established within your LAN. That shouldn’t be possible with a VPN.
Its the ProtonVPN apk v 1.2… I can see all the devices on my network when using proton but I am unable to connect. If something is misconfiged if came that way. I DLed the app logged in and hit quick connect.
You would think that but I was able to use Nords app and was able to pass various DNS leak test. I am hoping someone with proton can explain it because I can see it as both a good and bad thing. I just don’t have the technical knowledge to be sure ether way. I guess it wouldn’t be an issue if I setup my router to connect to the VPN.
I would say that being able to Cast while connected to VPN is a bad thing…at least to me. Your DNS leak tests may have passed, but something is definitely leaking. I would ask Nord to explain how that was possible. It should be an intentional hole in their VPN. If not, that’s a problem…at least IMO.
