qBittorrent with Mullvad VPN: fast downloads but very slow uploads?

Hi everyone,

I’m having some troubles with qBittorrent in Docker. I know Mullvad has killed port forwarding, but I’m not sure if that’s the problem.

Thing is I’m able to download close to the maximum speed of my connection (1 gigabit through ethernet) but somehow I’m uploading at 50-80kb/s all the time and I’m not sure if this is because of Mullvad or it’s just no one is leeching from me. I switched to a different server and still the same. Is there a way to check this? Could it be because of Mullvad not allowing port forwarding? If that’s the case, shouldn’t my download rates be very slow too?

Thank you!

Mullvad has killed port forwarding

What does this mean? Well, it’s still possible to upload, but now you will only be able to connect to users who have an open port on their side.

I have a Proxmox server with a container running qBittorrent and Mullvad. I have about 2TB of active torrents, and I can upload an average of 20GB per day—sometimes more, sometimes less, like 6GB. Without a VPN, I can easily upload 200-400GB per day with only 2TB of files.

So, you get to enjoy your full download speed and anonymity.

What would be an appropriate alternative to allow full upload speed?
I’m also having the same issue although I’m in the UK.

Even while not torrenting my mullvad upload speeds are not great. Taking 300 down under ten up

It’s great to enjoy full download speed and anonymity, but I also want to seed, specially considering I’m in private trackers, so I really have to seed to get to ratio 1:1 at least…

Why not use other VPNs with PF or a seedbox?

I’m in Europe too. I’m trying to check by disabling the VPN in the container, and if that’s the problem unfortunately I’ll be switching from Mullvad to Proton VPN, since they do allow port forwarding

I moved to ProtonVPN, which allows port forwarding, and my upload rates are much much much better now. I’m sad to move away from Mullvad since it was my VPN service of choice, but their upload rates are not useful

You need a different VPN that allows port forwarding like ProtonVPN

You need VPN with port forwarding. It will allow opening a port on your network and forward it to VPN tunnel. Or don’t use VPN at all and just open a port which qBittorrent uses. You just can’t get it with this VPN provider.

Try getting a seedbox. I pay $5.75 a month for ultra CC that gives me 1tb of storage and let’s me seed outside of my PC. It’s really easy to use FTP to download the files you want.

Is there any reason not to use the free tier on proton, if all you run is a single torrent box for example?

Or are there hidden issues?
