Question About Traveling with Kodi on FireStick

Can someone help me understand why I can not make Kodi to work on my hotel wifi?

I can get on the wifi network at the hotel, stream other apps, but Kodi wont play. I travel alot and the content on regular hotel cable sucks. I hope there is a setting to help. Or is there a lite version?

Ideas or thoughts?

I assume you are using media addons to stream? Likely the hotel has blocked them.

If you are trying to stream media from your home network to the hotel, that would likely work, use Jellyfin / Emby / Plex addons for Kodi for that.

Not sure why yours wouldn’t work but I travel with a Firestick all the time and if I can get the TV to change the input HDMI source then Kodi always works for me, although WiFi speeds in some hotels are so bad you can’t watch over 720p. No need to change any settings in Kodi from what works at home.

Probably the add-ons trying to connect to web servers blocked by the hotel firewall. Try to load a VPN app and see if this would work.

I usually take a tablet & never have any bother using Kodi with a VPN. Hotels do seem to be making life increasingly difficult for Firestick users so bypass them altogether.

Side note for people traveling bringing their firestick to hotels. I’ve ran into physical metal blockers, that prevent you from using the hdmi port on the hotel TV. Make it a habit to toss in a Swiss Army knife (or similar multitool) in your travel bag, as usually a Phillips head will remove these. It won’t be long until these hotels start buying specially made TVs without any external HDMI ports, thereby forcing you to buy their in house programming.

Are you trying to use Kodi for its intended and primary purpose - playing local content/media. (Yes, add ons exist)

I’ve traveled with Kodi and a portable drive. Worked perfect.

If you’re trying to stream from your home, you need plex or Emby. You can have both. I do. They can coexist without bothering each other, or can totally integrate with 3rd party add ons

Cool tip. I guess that would be much lighter and network security might let it thru… Ill try it.

In nicer hotels they offer a bridge to access popular apps. Guests keep leaving themselves logged in. :joy:

But, the extended stays are definitely being blow hards about it. Im going to start calling hotels to find out what their media setup is before I book. Good advice, thanks!

Direct from FireStick into an HDMI 2 behind the Samsung TV.

You’re welcome. You may try to install Cloudflare app which is fast, its not going to encrypt traffic but uses Cloudflare DNS.

I traveled with mine all the time and you so tell Wi-Fi. Do you have a VPN? I have a VPN that’s why I don’t think the hotel blocks me

Emby is amazing. I haven’t had any trouble at all streaming my content wherever I am. Kodi on the other hand… Omg. I spent so many hours trying to get that thing to stream properly before I gave up.

Yes but where is the content (the movie files) - the firestick only has 8gb of storage (16 on new models), so they most likely are not ON the stick.
