As it looks like the Snoopers Charter is going ahead in its current form I’m looking for recommendations for a non-UK based trustworthy VPN to use to hide my activity.
My actual browsing history is boring AF, however I’m expecting the logs to be hacked/left on a train on an unencrypted USB/sold to the highest bidder at some point and would prefer it if my occasional curiosity about Brazilian midget fart porn was not readily accessible.
All comes down to trust at the end of the day. I’ve been using TunnelBear, I mailed them about snoopers two weeks ago or so. Their co-founder got back to me saying they don’t keep logs so there’s no browsing history etc to give the UK gov, and they’re looking into the situation with their lawyers to see how/if this will affect them. I quite like them, have it on both my MacBook and iPhone.
Located in Sweden, no logs, anonymous payment per BTC possible. It gives you an unlimited number of 3 hour trial accounts to play with. Regular subscription costs 5€ per month.
I use IVPN and have previously used AirVPN. Both are good.
Do not trust PiA. It’s extremely suspicious that the highest rated comment always seems suggests them, even though they are a US based service. My guess is they push their affiliates programme extremely aggressively.
Running my own with OpenVPN on a scaleway ARM server, does everything I need it to and i get the benefit of a proper bare-metal server to play with for a fiver/month.
Is there one that’s good for PS4 users? My internet is mostly for streaming Sky, Netflix and iPlayer as well as online gaming. Which would be best for that?
I like the function in it which allows you to manually select the country that you’re in; allows you to access stuff that might be “blocked in your country”. Having said that, i don’t know if this is a typical function of VPNs or not…
I’ve been a TorGuard user for a few years now, previously I was with Privacy.IO (which I believe is now defunct). I rather like TG, they have plenty of server options in multiple countries running different protocols and encryption, so they end up being quite useful for various troubleshooting purposes as well as a way around geoblocking and of course as a general internet condom.
I have been thinking of running my own using a Digital Ocean server/droplet based in the Netherlands or Germany running OpenVPN. Setup my home router and phone to use it, so a single dedicated server all to myself.
