Some Interesting Menes and Anecdotes on Team PSG.LGD

Yesterday I saw some comments on the Chinese team and players feels too distant from the rest of the world and Chinese players being almost emotionless. As a Chinese dota players who’s been paying attention to both western and eastern dota scenes, I don’t think that’s the case. This is largely due to the culture and geographical distance that we have and I really felt obliged to tell you guys some of the interesting memes and anecdotes on Chinese teams and players, starting from PSG.LGD. *This post will be updated later this day as I need to focus on my work at the moment.

The current in-game ID for player Ame, “萧瑟”, which is from ancient Chinese poems, indicates the sound of wind going through tree leaves, especially in autumn. It is used to represent the chilliness and depression one feels in a season of loneliness. This ID was first seen after TI9, old PSG.LGD’s second failed attempt in claiming the aegis.

Player Ame is often referred to as “the idiot king” , because his first name “淳煜” shares the same pronunciation with idiot fish in Chinese, and his last name “王”, has a meaning of “King”, thus the title “the idiot king”. Another thing contributing to this name is his calm and introvert personality in front of the public. In pub games, streams, he barely speaks anything and just plays dota, with occasional coughs which is described by the chat as the dragon’s cough(dragon is the symbol of emperor’s rule and his absolute supremacy). If anyone managed to have Ame speak a word in pub games, chat would spam “medical miracle” for Ame’s mute nature somehow disappeared.

Player Ame has been known for his incredibly fast farming speed. Whenever he has a bad start and 15 minutes later somehow managed get to the top of the networth chart, chat would call this “making money out of the crotch”, which basically means making money out of nowhere, a compliment for his excellent, sometimes ridiculous farming skills. Ame haters would spam “Atme” if he get caught when farming because he gives money back to his enemy like an ATM machine.

Ame fans in China would use the word “扣” if Ame carries and win the game. This word describes the action involved in female masturbation (in a way that is not offensive to female) and is only used to show fan’s excitement seeing such excellent performances from Ame. And sometimes, if Ame’s carry continues, chat would spam that they are “dehydrated” because they “扣” so hard that they run out of water down there(again it’s only a joke) so they need to get some water.

The current PSG.LGD is often joked as a weeb team for the fact that there’s a bunch of anime lovers in them, with Ame, y, and XinQ being the most prominent. Famous Chinese Vtuber A-soul even cheered for PSG.LGD before their departure for TI10.

New updates: One of Ame’s high school classmates shared her experience with Ame. He was pursued by a lot of girls during that time for his extremely attractive looking. Also, Ame scored an insane 140+ out of 160(top 1% by my rough estimation) in College Entrance Examination in Jiangsu Province, which is a region notoriously famous for its high difficulty in math exams. However, his Chinese and English grades were so poor that his composition was described as “written by someone in primary school” by his Chinese teacher.

*Hey guys, thank you so much for your appreciation, I have to work for now and more stories will be told for the rest of LGD crew as well as star players from the old rooster. Again, thank you for your support.

Hey guys, I am back and will start updating now, sorry to keep you waiting. The following content are all fresh. Hope you can enjoy and feel free to leave your comment below, I wil try my best to reply.

Maybe used to be referred to as “the wild caveman” in 2018 Epicenter Major because he forgot to bring his razor with his, which made him look incredibly messy with all the beard growing like mad around his mouth. Or it may also be that in that tournament, Maybe was playing ultra agressively like a mad man, a man that obeys no rules and knows only recklessness, and somehow always owned the lane and win the game whoever he faced. You can almost feel his confidnece poping off the screen if you saw him play that series. It was a beaituful and sweet victory for LGD with a 3-1 against team Liquid. One month before that, LGD lost to Mineski on DAC final and suffered a lot from the toxic comment. Maybe tweeted on his blog " I never think this is the closest we will be in taking the champion, cause I will take the champion by my own hands, just see" He played pubs and trained like hell the month after and we all know the rest of the story.

\“the wild caveman\”

After the failure of LGD ending only in 3rd place in TI9, sentiments were brewing in the team. Despite getting the best placement in China region, a change has to happen for the old five(Ame, Maybe, Chalice, Fy and Xnova), who’s spent an extra year playing together after their deafening loss against OG in TI8.

Ame and Maybe after their loss in TI9

After TI9, Maybe left LGD, a team he’s spent almost 6 with, and joined team Elephant, together with Paparazi, and Yang, two previous VG players. Management in Elephant first found Sylar to play carry for the team. But the official announcement for the Elephant rooster got deleted the second day because the management at Elephant prefer Paparazi to Sylar. Things do not end here. Paparazi is not allowed to play in Elephant even though he’s already in Elephant’s training camp for there’s a default fee that needs to be paid to transfer to another team before the contract terminates. However, this sum, a total of 1.5 million CNY, which is supposed to be born by Elephant’s boss, felt very reluctant or may even refused to pay this amount. In the end, Paparazi paid for his own transfer fee to get to play in the team.

After this, Elephant became a highly controversial team and the management team was heavily critized for their demoralized move. The team offered the desertted carry 200K CNY but was turned down by him. Sylar later joined Ehome, with former LGD players Xnova and Chalice.

Strictly speaking Paparazi is also the victim. Despite that, some people would call him“自费C”, meaning, the carry that pays for himself.

However, the sail for the starship (literally) is not smooth. Their performance during the DPC season was mediocre to say the best. They did not even got qualified for any Major this season and had to play TI qualifiers to get the slot. In the final match, Elephant defeated Ehome and got the ticket for TI. Yang, nicknamed Leather Shoe Yang becase he likes to wear leather shoe, was famous for his toxic nature. Yang features a signature “politeness trio”, which basically “greets” you, your mom and your dad at the same time. And during his time in Elephant, his performance is lacklaster. It is also said that Maybe and Yang played a lot of counterstrike instead of pubs, another possible cause for their performance.

Time for something delightful(warning:weeb level raising)

Earlier this year, on Chinese forum NGA, there’s a post called I got surrounded by all the bijins (beautiful girls) in my school, what should I do?-----Story for Ame The post is basically a harem light novel femalizing all LGD players (both current and formal) as well as some players in OG. All the plot and of course the characters in the novel is based on or at least inspired by real-life events and anecdotes in dota scene. Ame, the protagnist, is often called Ame senpai in the novel by girls around him, which, as the meme got much more widespread, became one of his popular nicknames. Chinese Dota fans would just call him “仙贝”, which is a name for a popular snack in China that is made of rice and shares the same pronunciation as “senpai”

Below I’ll list the basic character setting for some of the players.

Maybe: Arrogant Ojou-sama

Xinq: Evil little loli

NothingToSay: Bijin foreign transfer student

Faithbian: Shapely bijin in sports club

Fy: sister to Maybe, emotionless Ojou-sama

Ana: Lazy genius classmate

Notail: Tsundere deskmate

the list goes on and on, and there’s a whole series of stories for all that. If you guys are interested, I might translate them. There’s even a Galgame based on this novel with voiceacotrs and all that, there’s videos for it on Chinese video website Bilibili, if you are interested.

Ah yes, the seasonal cultural exchange of Dota memes between the east and west

Thank you for your contribution

If anyone managed to have Ame speak a word in pub games, chat would spam “medical miracle” for Ame’s mute nature somehow disappeared.

Man so we got a special treat hearing Ame use mic in one of gorp’s games.

Let me do some complimentary. For IG(my fav), kaka as known as 414, peepee, natural god, has most of the memes in IG. When kaka died in the lane, you will see 自然(which means natural) full of the screen to indicate that the death is so natural that you can’t blame kaka. When kaka dies back, he will tp to the mid lane to fill the bottle of emo, then you will see 灌(fill)尿(pee) (which means refill urine to the bottle). So, kaka got the nickname 尿尿(peepee). When kaka turns in to god mode, the chat room will use 414 (世界第一四号位 translate to: word best position 4), sometimes we will also use 轰鸣模式(which means the mode of starting the combustion eigen). As for flyfly (飞飞 in Chinese) , when he died in the gank, we will joking:是飞飞自己飞飞了 means that it is flyfly himself flyfly( here fly means dump) . When flyfly carry the game, we will type 飞飞我的超人 means flyfly my super man(this meme is originally from comic 《Grapple》). Emo the question mark man, we got only one single word for this guy 狂(which can stand for super confident or too arrogant).

Damn now I feel even sad for them Ame and his former teammates, wish them the best of luck in their upcoming match.

wow! this is why I love the character-based language.
each character can have various meanings and hidden messages.
too bad for me, I flunked in any language courses.

I really appreciate your post!
And, yeah, eastern culture emphasises collective harmony, which influences many of us to keep quiet rather than speak what’s on our mind.
but we are all, deep inside, are humans with hearts and emotions.

This is really interesting and funny!! Thank you so much for sharing. Ive loved chinese dota since dota1 and its great to get some inside info in the fun stuff!

I’m looking forward to more of this for sure!

Let me add on to the recent Elephant meme haha.

Elephant.Yang has a nickname called 皮鞋杨 (Pi Xie Yang, aka Leather shoes Yang), because he likes to wear leather shoes very much. Legend has it that when he first reported to VG for work, he wore a tattered top but a pair of shiny leather shoes.

And because of his recent terrible Mars plays (miss ults, point blank spear whiffs, etc.), whenever he picked Mars, Chinese audience will spam 皮尔斯 ('Pi’rs, reads like ‘Pierce’, like u replace the first two letters of Mars to his nickname Pi).

And some memes are like:
“Mars is good for the draft, but not Pirs”
“The one thing Yang never seems to fail at is failing his team.”

ATMe is a great nickname lol

This thread needs more attention. We would love to know more about CN doto community and their thoughts on TI10 so far.

When Chalice (the former teammate of Ame and Maybe) casting the LGD vs Elephant match yesterday, he was asked by the co-caster that “This MOR (Ame) and ST (Maybe) can not carry you to win when they were even in the same team?”.

I wonder if there is someone posting random explenations of stupid western memes to weibo lol

True 萧瑟 is the sound of leaves. But Ame chose this name because of the character of the Chinese novel/anime 少年歌行. I feel like the arc of that character is pretty similar to Ame. 萧瑟 is a prince and kung-fu prodigy. But he lost all his skills and fame at the age of 16 (TI8). The main story of the novel is how 萧瑟 works his way back to become the emperor (now).

Literal savant.

If anyone managed to have Ame speak a word in pub games, chat would spam “medical miracle” for Ame’s mute nature somehow disappeared.

Gorgc’s lousy pos5 play was able to make Ame communicate with him. Talk about Gorp making a miracle Kappa

I love posts like these! thanks for the translations

I mean China is memeing on a different level

Man, reading this makes Ame sounds like the MC from a shonen anime.

Literal genius, introverted personality with handsome features pursued by tons of girls.

Btw, would like to hear the chinese fans take on NTS as well.

Just saw a nice short story about NothingToSay (abbreviated as NTS below).

Apparently he started to play in a cybercafe esports team in Malaysia when he was in secondary school. He was a quiet and polite boy, always following his teammates around, and had a very low-key profile.

During TI9, there was a pubstomp organised in a mall in Malaysia. The pubstomp had a 1v1 session, so the organizer invited NTS over for a part-time job, which is to let NTS play 1v1 against random pubstomp attendees. The salary was relatively low because NTS was not famous back then.

So that day, the pubstomp organizer (Org below) was chatting with NTS while watching TI9 together.

Org: Who do u think is better in mid? U or XX (a TI player, name not mentioned)?

NTS: Should be similar level, he is probably slightly better than me

Org: Well I think u are better than him, at most it’s a 50-50 if you play mid against him

NTS: hmm yeah

Org: But why is he playing in TI, while u are playing 1v1 with random dudes here? It’s not because u are worse in skills, it’s just the lack of opportunity for u. Next time if I call u to work as part-timer in pubstomp again, I hope u will answer “fk off, i am playing in TI”.

NTS looked at him and laughed, “OK.”

Everyone knows the ending to this story. NTS went to China to play competitive Dota, and became one of the best mid player in the world.

Beautiful post. I would love to see such posts from sea and sa regions too. Dota is truly an international sport.
