UPDATE: I sent a message to their support team to ask about it and got this reply:
After the latest Windows NordVPN application version 6.33.10 the Split-Tunneling feature might not work as intended. Some applications that have been added to the “DisableVPNForApps” list will still be seen as with a VPN connection (such as Netflix, CW, Hololo, Jin, Citrix).
The issue is related to Windows not being able to split the DNS requests. Even though the applications are using a non-VPN tunnel for the connection, the DNS requests are still going through the VPN tunnel for security reasons.
Our developers are aware of the issue and it will be fixed with a future update.

ORIGINAL POST:
This is the second time I received an update notice from my Windows 10 NordVPN app (see the screenshot for the exact message). Both times it said there is a new split tunneling feature which I was really excited about. Both times I immediately tried it out and found that it doesn’t work. Both times after restarting my pc I get the error message from the second screenshot. The first time all this happened was 3/4 weeks ago and the second time today. After that first time I did what the error message mentioned, reinstalled NordVPN. When I did though, the entire split tunneling function just disappeared without a trace. I couldn’t find anything about this feature being introduced for Windows 10 NordVPN online and atm, it doesn’t say anything about it still after this second time on the release notes page for the Windows 10 NordVPN app on NordVPN’s website. So now I’m really reluctant to reinstall again this second time. Does anyone know what’s going on?.. I tried sending messages to NordVPN 3 weeks ago but they didn’t respond. I would love to see the split tunneling feature and this is the second time I get disappointed by an update claiming it’s here…

I’m having the same issue.
Still causing issues, any idea when this will be fixed?
An easy work around the bug is to just tell chrome to use a particular dns (i use cloudflare) under advanced settings (i had to do this as as when using nord dns some sites did not even load). However option to do in app does not seem to be disabled for me just buggy with dns.
I just bought NordVPN and tried using split tunnel and this is still happening.
This issue still exist, how can’t this be fixed yet?
This issue is still a problem…
Just spent nearly three hours chatting with NordVPN before I finally got someone to tell me:
"AGENT (Garfield): It seems that the issue is related to the NordVPN application not being aple to Split DNS requests, however, split DNS functionality is not available yet. As a result, even after you enabled only Firefox traffic to go through the VPN tunnel, since the VPN by itself is enabled, all of your DNS requests will still go through the VPN tunnel. The issue is related to Windows not being able to split the DNS requests. Even though the applications are using a non-VPN tunnel for the connection, the DNS requests are still going through the VPN tunnel for security reasons. Our team is working on a solution, however, we cannot provide the exact ETA as it might be misleading. "
When I then asked how come it hasn’t been fixed despite being a known issue for at least two years, the agent said:
“AGENT (Garfield): Since this is related to how Windows OS handles DNS requests, we are still working towards a workaround.AGENT (Garfield): As we do not have access to change how Windows by itself handles DNS requests, it is taking some time, therefore, we apologize for the inconvenience.”
Hope that saves others from wasting their time on hoping the issue was fixed, as it hasn’t been.
looks like 6.33 has been rolled back
I’ve had the same problem with my remote desktop RDP (MSTSC.exe) app that I use for work most days - continually gets disconnected even after adding it to the Disable VPN list.
Just to mention a few things that this problem affects:Netflix, Electrum Wallet, Atomic Wallet, Minecraft.
Will edit this post if i see other applications fail as well.
Temp fix for Chrome to load netflix:chrome://settings/security?search=dnsUse other DNS in advanced tab (I used google DNS) (wanted to run with regular connection with my chrome browser from the start so…)
Same issue, both on gaming machine where punk buster didn’t work because of it and CSS showing as I am in Italy…
Also on phone where Hue app defaulting to Italy when choosing location and the bridge not working for myself but does for partner
I was just about to sign up for the multi year deal until I spotted this issue. This is a showstopper for me. I must have full, functional control over my apps. I guess I’ll try a different one on a monthly until this is fixed.
I get rather random results with T-Rex (ETH mining), whichever way around I configure NordVPN via “Enable VPN for” or “Disable VPN for”. I could see that it was working for MS Edge, but then it broke T-Rex again. So I’ve had to disable the VPN altogether.
FYI - T-Rex did work over VPN for about a day but then stopped. Before that experience I had thought that certain VPN servers were OK and others weren’t. But clearly not.
This is still a thing unfortunately… If I point a browser to netflix.com it just times out when split tunneling is on.
Issue is occuring here on my laptop, its idling at Installing SplitTunnelling driver.
The feature is completely gone for me, unfortunately.
Anyone know a workaround?
I’m having the same issue here, I’m using VPN split tunneling on app like Firefox and Qbittorrent, but I use Opera to go without VPN. when I use opera to connect to for example www.amazon.it the connection cannot be established. I notice however that if I go to amazon.com it works and I don’t know why, I’m actually using the Cloudflare DNS
I may have found a solution. I customized the DNS server settings within the VPN software itself as opposed to windows or the browser. I made them all Cloudflare.
It’s been 48 hours and I have not had any of the same connection issues as before, all this while the split tunneling is active and working properly with my qBittorent. Fingers crossed that it keeps working! Curious if this works for anyone else. If so, please share.
Sorry to hear that! Kind of glad to know I’m not alone though…
That worked for me with both Opera and Firefox. Thanks a lot mate.
I used
Split-Tunneling on and
“VPN for selected Apps deactivated” (I had to translate that, it shows probably different, but i think you know what i mean.)
At least it works for Amazon Prime like a charm. Without that it was slow as hell and didn’t load Pictures.
