Mullvad is based in Sweden which is a part of 14 eyes alliance. I would like to make my switch to Mullvad but Sweden jurisdiction is my only concern. Please advise how much I should be concerned because of its jurisdiction. Highly dissatisfied with Surfshark VPN logs policy, can not trust my data with them anymore. In the nutshell, looking forward for true no log VPN. If any kinds of logs are kept I would rather trust my ISP over VPN.
Would like to use for torrenting, encrypt all whole network traffic (if true no logs policy is valid). Will be using wireguard protocol on dd-wrt firmware for faster speeds. Streaming devices I will exclude not to use wireguard tunnel as I notice many people said Mullvad is not good for streaming service which I am not too much concerned.
Advance thanks
It makes me laugh when I see people shunning mullvad only because of “eyes” and then going with a VPN based in Hong Kong or the Bahamas with totally unknown ownership and management combined with indeterminate regulatory oversight. For all they know, it is run by an actual intelligence service.
“Eyes” makes no difference other than satisfying your paranoia.
If the government wants to get you - they will get you. Eyes or no eyes.
Russia, China, Iran are no eyes countries, would you feel safer using a VPN based in those countries than Sweden? I certainly wouldn’t.
Someone at NSA just snerked up their last sip of mountain dew reading this post.
Thanks for the information.
Nothing sketchy I am doing at all. Basically, my main purpose of using VPN : targeted ads based on my browsing history, light torrenting only for personal use and my personal browsing activities should not be sold in the market for money.
In simple words, I do not want to give my original mailing address out there. On the other hand, I have already gave a thought to myself last evening that I should route my all traffic (without VPN) through ISP but when I need to download movies then I should just turn ON my VPN. So, basically I do not have to join Mullvad if I am using Surfshark already
First of all nothing paranoid here.
Basically, I posted query because I do not like my current VPN provider new policy of 15 minutes logs and that is why I mentioned looking forward for true no log VPN with whom I can trust my data rather than my ISP or my existing provider.
Any provider can claim they don’t log, you’ll never know how truthful that statement is unless you work for the company and you’re responsible for all the configuration I suppose.
Mullvad never had any controversies regarding logs to my knowledge, and they always try to be transparent regarding logs and Swedish laws. They do log some stuff, like payment details for example. There’s an article on mullvad’s website describing what kind of data they store, in what format and for how long.
At the end of the day, this is matter of how much you trust a VPN provider that they don’t lie about how they operate, the country of registration makes no difference. Mullvad’s generally considered a top pick for a privacy focused VPN despite being located in the eyes country.
Actually VPN’s do help with that because when I am sharing VPN server IP address with multiple other users (which is shared Public IP) I get mixed up targeted ads not only mine. I might see someone ad which other user searched but I never searched.
I am very aware about how HTTPS work
Really ISP would not bother !! ISP’s makes alot of money from browsing history in your words even it is in terms of pages
About cookies and trackers : I use Privacy Badger extension. Ton of ways to reject cookies automatically except strictly necessary cookies but extension will take care of that and VPN hides my real location than actual location.
I get it. It is a matter of trust but based on your suggestion I’ll give a try to Mullvad.
Yeah, with commercial VPNs trust and reputation are the only things that really matter.
Mullvad or any provider will have to cooperate with law enforcement regardless, but if they are true to their zero log policy, there’s nothing they’d be able to give to the police because the data doesn’t exist. I think under Swedish laws they also can’t even be forced to start silently logging people but I’m not 100% positive on that.
Good to know. I checked their policy and I am happy with that.
