Pretty sure everyone knows about the issues with AT&T fiber at this point. I’m getting a lot of feedback that using a VPN fixes it. My issue is that I play on a PS5, and all my research seems to indicate that you can only really run a VPN on PS5 with a vpn router.
I have tried ExpressVPNs media streamer but that doesn’t accomplish what I’m trying to do - only seems to fool streaming services and nothing else.
This is completely uncharted territory for me, but I’ve looked into a lot.
What I’m effectively looking for advice for is some sort of VPN router compatible with AT&T fiber. I have express VPN on trial, but the routers it suggests don’t appear to be compatible. I also don’t want to break the bank if at all possible.
Google hasn’t been great help with this and although I find reddit posts about VPN routers and such, usually they’re pretty old or just deny that AT&T fiber is compatible with VPN routers at all, which doesn’t appear to be true if you look at other posts.
tl;dr - Looking for a either a way to run a VPN on PS5 that actually works for FFXIV or barring that a VPN router that is compatible with AT&T fiber.
Also if it helps I’m pretty sure my AT&T router is a BGW210.
There’s a thread on the official forums with the link above. Please add to that if you can!
I’m not sure If I’ve seen solutions for PS5 users, but its worth giving a look. This has been going on for 11 days now for a sudden surge of users and has dated back months for some people. We just need to keep putting a fire underneath this trio until its fixed.
Look up GL INET devices on Amazon. Cheap, simple routers that run OpenWRT and support tons of VPN services and can act in one of two ways:
as the router of your network, with VPN, with the ATT router in Passthrough mode, all traffic going out would go through the VPN including the PS5
drop in vpn gateway. The device sits inside your LAN. You setup the VPN service on the device. Then on your PS5, use a manual IP and set the gateway to the device
Can also do #2 with a Raspberry Pi and Wireguard. Just did it today with my PS5 and huge improvement so far. Took about 30 min to setup the Pi with Mullvad Wireguard.
The GL inet devices run about $30-80 on Amazon depending on what features you want.
By combining the advice I received here, I found running a wifi hotspot on my phone with VPN connected to Los Angeles 5 with ExpressVPN appears to help. I’ll report back if this turns out to be a fluke, but my game appears to be immediately running better. Just gotta hit a dungeon or raid and check if there’s any rubber banding. Thanks all!
FYI for those needing VPN on PC, I find that ExpressVPN and NordVPN fixed this issue for me. Make sure you’re choosing the Los Angeles server (LA1/LA5 for ExpressVPN and just that one LA server for NordVPN).
I tried to Google this but I wasn’t able to get a clear answer. If I wifi tether my phone to the ps5 while my phone has a VPN going, does that use the VPN on the ps5 as well? I’m thinking like how windows can be made into a virtual router.
Thank you for saying so! I was planning on doing a virtual router per previous suggestions, but I didn’t know which server would actually resolve the problem.
