Using a VPN with an Xbox One

Has anyone here tried this? I want to watch BBCi player on my Xbox and I live outside of the UK. From what I’ve read, the best method is to install a VPN directly to my Wifi router and then connect my xbox to it as usual. Problem is that I’ve read that installing a VPN to the Wifi network could slow our whole network down, has anyone done this and noticed any issues? Could it then be a problem when streaming 4k Netflix etc?

What router do you have? You could have one wifi network with vpn and one standard if you have 2 bands.
Or route wifi traffic normally and ethernet over vpn

I have used ExpressVPN with great success, they offer their own modified dd-wrt firmware, and I used it on a asus wrt-ac87u and the dual core 1 ghz processor managed 30-40mbps down and the same for upload on my 50/50 fibre connection… so totally satisfied with that. Used a close server but all of Scandinavia had the same results.

Edit: On 5 ghz AC wifi

As an alternative to running it on your router, you could set up the VPN on a Raspberry Pi and then use that as the gateway for your Xbox (and any other devices you want to use the VPN).

Thanks for all your answers guys, very helpful

It will slow down your internet as routers have weak processing cores. It’ll bottleneck the entire house’s internet.

I had that problem when using openvpn on 100mbps internet speed, it slowed my devices down to about 8mbps.

I suggest Ethernet wire your computer to your motem or router, then use windows 10 to share VPN via tap adapter to the windows 10 hotspot.

Or opposite, wirelessly connect to your router on your computer. Then go to network adapters, share connection from tap adapter to Ethernet port, and connect the device Ethernet to your computer directly.

Yes it will work…depending on which router you use. My setup is an AC86u, Merlin firmware & OpenVpn…My speeds are usually around +/-190Mbps on a 200/20 connection (Mullvad). Speeds on WiFi/ethernet are more or less the same. No issues here…Depending on which VPN provider you use, you will be able to watch Netflix behind a VPN.

any guide for this or hows the performance?

Just found this sub post.

Step one, buy a Raspberry Pi 3+ because it has built in wifi.

Step two, follow the RPi3+ instructions to install Raspbian.

Step 3, run the command on this site and follow instructions.

Step 4, enable port forwarding on your router to your VPN server, AKA, the RPi3+.

Step 5, leave it alone now since your VPN is running internal to your network, encrypting the data going outbound.

Step 5A, manually set your Xbox’s network gateway to the IP of the RPi3+ if you’re having connection issues, or leave it alone since the VPN is working internally.

I’ve had the RPi3+ running OpenVPN for about a month now, port forwarding enabled on my Google WiFi mesh network. I don’t experience slowdowns or high ping while gaming. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Vudu, and Kodi doesn’t buffer or lag. I have OpenVPN installed on my phone with the cert from my VPN server so I can connect to it at all times. It’s really not that difficult to set up. There are a ton of YouTube how-tos and guides on how to do this.
