Using VPN to hide location on work issued laptop that doesn’t have VPN, but does track location

I am working out of state for a few months. I do not want my work to know this. What is the best way to hide my location? Would the best way to hide location to download VPN to phone and use as a hotspot, download to work computer, or download to router?

Which would be the best to hide location?

Thanks in advance!

The best way is to run a VPN connection from a router. Turn off WiFi on your work computer and connect it to the router by wire. WiFi might leak your location despite that you’re using a VPN.

Also, you’ll be connecting to the company VPN server from the work PC. The VPN server might trigger a security warning when it sees a connection from a commercial VPN IP address.

What did you end up using ? I’m in the same boat coming up here in a few months

  1. Install a VPN server on your router at your home.
  2. Install a VPN client on your router at your vacation spot. Connect it to the VPN server at home.
  3. Connect your phone to the VPN server at home.
  4. Make sure to configure the vacation router to move traffic from your work laptop’s mac address over the vpn.

This would be a cakewalk to setup if you can get your hands on 2 Unifi Security Gateways (they’re super cheap used) and whatever Unifi access point would fit best with your environment.

What do u do for work on the laptop?

Maybe just put vnc on it and remote into it from another laptop while on vacation

Has anyone tried Always Home https://www.homingsystems.com/ for this? Will it work? I am in the same boat and can not download any software on the company’s laptop

Easiest would be to download VPN to work computer.

Did you find any solution yet?

can I also add that we created the routers to solve this exact problem? we also made them so you can change vpn location. a feature all vpn routers lack.

check is out: https://vpnrouters.shop/

How can I connect to my home router by wire when I am overseas?

What did you end up using

Any solution yet? I am in the same boat as well.

Do you by any chance provide service to guide us through the process? If we get the hardware you linked, would you be able to help go through steps above?

Of course with the appropriate pay…

Can I get your assistance with this? I am having a bit of a struggle completing this.

Did you ever end up trying this? I noticed they have a hardware device for hot spotting it seems.

But will they notice I downloaded a vpn on their side? I’m not sure how much they monitor what we do on the lap tops. They are pretty hands off in general. I just want to make sure I’m all good.

You’ll run a VPN server on your home router. Bring another router with you overseas.

Connect your overseas router to the Internet and establish a VPN connection to your home router.

Then connect your work PC to your overseas router by wire.

Except the wifi can also give away your location.
Edit to add: skip the ubiquiti unifi ap, buy a switch instead.

Uncertain. Not sure what ‘spyware’ they have installed if any to monitor the device. Without actually seeing the device it’s impossible to say. I use a VPN in my router, I personally find it best, but it’s much more complicated to set up than software.

Why not use the VPN router idea?
