Does anyone know , Can using a VPN hide your location when clocking in and out through ADP or other work tracking systems?
Not familiar with ADP, but If it’s running on a mobile app, it’s probably going to ask your device for its GPS location rather than guessing based on your network connection, so a VPN wouldn’t do anything.
Personal VPNs may hide your location and encrypt traffic, but once you are on the company’s network, they can still track activity through network-level monitoring tools.
Whatever you’re thinking, you better believe that the industry has already thought of it, and has ways of detecting and deterring that behavior.
Take your computer mouse, for example. Companies would require remote workers to be at their desk for the full shift. To prove that you were at your desk, they track mouse movement.
People devised mouse wigglers, devices that automatically wiggle your mouse for you, so it looks like you’re active, but you’re not at your desk.
In response, companies devised algorithms to detect mouse wigglers.
It’s an arms race, each side tries something new, and the other side combats it. Never-ending back-and-forth.
So whatever you’re considering, weigh carefully if it’s worth you risking losing your job. Because you can be relatively sure they’ve thought of it, and have ways to counter it.
hmmm thanks for the input will definitely look into it
thanks for the input… hopefully it works!
*wah* yasss definitely! I am definitely considering that!!! thanks for your thoughtful insight. I am pretty much seeing this as a sign to find a new job! (due to current living situation)
it won’t be through a smart phone, it would be through the ADP website on a laptop. would that make a difference ?
Don’t seek a new job just because of this issue you brought up initially. Many employers are setting up systems like this. If it were just one employer, then you wouldn’t find hundreds of mouse wiggler devices on Amazon. What I mean, is, the popularity of the devices is because many, many employers have set up this stuff.
So don’t switch jobs JUST because of that. Because you may find the same thing anywhere you work.
