VPN connected but status is grey - What does that mean? Ways to solve?

Using NordVPN with OpenVPN setup on my QNAP server for torrenting purposes.

A few weeks back noticed that my torrent client is going through the standard IP address. I checked my QNAP server and the client shows as connected, however the status is grey.

From QNAP’s website it is not clear what this means, but I do see no traffic goes through it under QVPN’s UI (0 bytes up/down).

I could not find a lot of info, but restarting, removing, adding other VPNs, yields the same results.

I reached out to QNAP’s support but they have not been too helpful thus far. Asking for access, but not necessarily doing much, and getting stuck on asking me to setup WireGuard with no instructions (I believe NordVPN does not do WireGuard, just something similar that requires their client).

Any advice?

Hi, did you ever end up resolving this? I’m having a similar issue on my QNAP.

I’ve had the same problem recently with BulletVPN. Turned out this was due to special characters in the VPN password, in my case a ‘$’.
After changing the password, it started to work normally again. :exploding_head:

Yes. Sorry. Their 3rd line support helped and I will also edit the post so people find the solution quickly.

  • This is because NordVPN has MFA turned on and QVPN is not managing it well.

  • In NordVPN you need to the portal, then ‘Services’, then ‘NordVPN’ and choose ‘Set up NordVPN Manually’

  • After you verify yourself with a code via email, you can copy/paste the username/password

  • Then in QVPN you edit your VPN connection and manually paste the password there (the connection details should be there already as you added from a file)

  • That should work out

Hm, unfortunately I had done that already, and still no luck. Thanks though!
