Does anyone know of any VPNs that will work on school wifi? I’ve tried at least the first 10 results when you search “VPN” on the Play Store and none of them work on my school’s wifi. They work on my home network, but at school none of them are able to connect to their server and when the VPN is “on.”
I have a Nexus 6P on Project Fi if that is of any help.
It’s likely not the fault of any app, but rather how the VPN server accepts connections, and how the school’s firewall is setup.
In short, a firewall can’t see what individual websites you’re viewing so instead a basic protection is to block all ip addresses associated with popular VPN servers. You’d need to find a VPN server that isn’t blacklisted. Next would be to block all connections using port 1194 which is a common port used for VPN access. You’d need to find a VPN server that allows connections on different or custom port numbers. Lastly, they may block access to anything not categorized in a filter, so if it’s an IP address, or a website the filter didn’t recognize, it’ll block access.
It the server uses the openvpn protocol, “OpenVPN for Android” is nice because you can view detailed logs of how it’s trying to connect. Most likely you’ll get a time out error if the school is blocking you, but unlikely to figure how they are doing it.
It’ll be difficult to find a free service that bypasses your school’s firewall.
Why is everyone on here obsessed with using their VPN in an educational facility? The first thing I was told when I got to college was not to pirate content because they monitor everything on the network and you could get thrown off your course and off campus. And before somebody replies to this saying “Ignore this dumb autistic retard cunt, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about” in the spirit of Reddit, no I don’t know everything and it probably is technically possible to avoid, but why risk it when you can just do it in private? Is school different in America in that you have to live there?
Sorry OP I’m not trying to be a dick to you here, just generally asking people.
Edit: Okay so unless it glitched, I posted in AndroidApps instead of Piracy. When you see so many people in one place asking the same question you start to associate a question with a community. But I guess people can assume that by “this” I mean Reddit as a whole.

That is OpenVPN default port. Not all VPN use that port number. I am positive they only allow TCP connection.
/u/TheHelixNebula is correct. It is more likely they block UDP connection. I use VPN sometime in college and they block UDP connection. I changed the connection to TCP and it work fine with TCP. Best chance for OP to use is get paid VPN through online and use their official app, I imagine they would allow the user to change the connection through there.
Also OP, make sure you check your school policy regarding the use of VPN. If there is no mention of VPN, then you should be fine using it.
If you’re connected to a VPN, then the school can’t see your traffic which is why the demand is so high to get VPNs working at schools. Also, many colleges do require that you live on campus at least your first year
I personally wouldn’t do it out of fear of something going wrong (I’ve read that a PIA feature can modify your connection indefinitely making you require a fresh install of Windows if it breaks, forgot what it’s called), but that’s beside the point. I wasn’t aware about the college thing, well not in the UK anyway where I think it’s completely optional for universities.
