This is my first foray into VPNs. Signed up for a service and am very happy with the results. The only problem is their software (as I’m finding out just about any software) isn’t supported on my Early 2008 MacBook running 10.7.5
This is my main machine for daily use so this really complicates thing. I’d like to avoid router level VPNs as my family uses alot of non-computer streaming devices (Rokus, game consoles, etc) that don’t need the use of the VPN and I’d rather not complicate things for them
Are there any client options for an ancient Mac that I can plug my VPN account credentials into?
I can’t remember if Mac had VPN support built in back then. You can check though. System Preferences, Network, click the + icon in bottom left, select VPN for type in the dialogue that pops up.
If it does, you can use an L2TP/IPSec VPN easily. Check recommendations in the sticky thread under /r/VPN
You can use [tunnelblick] (https://www.tunnelblick.net) and get the configs from a VPN provider or make your own OpenVPN configs.
Awesome found the instructions for that through my provider! Might stick with Tunnelblick if it works so I can have access to all the servers
Thanks!
Perfect they have instructions for that through the provider! I’ll give that a shot!
Do I lose out on any features from the provider by using tunnelblick? Pretty much just have the ability to jump between servers? I assume the kill switch option is proprietary to their software (not that I would use it much)
Kill switch is proprietary but tunnelblick is great. I use it on Sierra as opposed to any proprietary software. It can be a little finicky from time to time, but nothing an app restart won’t fix.
Unfortunately they don’t have kill switch using this function. Very basic i’m afraid.
You could look around to applescript the a kill switch so when the interface goes down those apps are shutdown.
