My router is able to route devices through a vpn and not just the whole network. I have my AppleTV set to Myanmar which has managed to remove all YouTube ads. This might work when using an on device VPN but I haven’t tested. Just a tip if anyone else was annoyed by the amount of ads on YouTube.
I pay for Premium (via “account sharing” - look for that sub).
But I also wanted to skip in-video ads because I used to have that ability with SmartTubeNext on my Shield TV. So this was posted on this sub a few week ago I believe and since I have my own server running, it was a no brainer to get this up and running and it’s been working well. No idea if it works well with ads though but it does skip sponsor segments pretty well.

EDIT 2: The following links are for Sponsorblock on computer; links for the extension/add-on for Chrome and Firefox below. Unfortunately, it’s not available on Safari. So I personally use Firefox as my ‘media browser’ on my Mac. If you don’t know what I mean by the in-video ads, these will both highlight and skip them - absolute game changing for Youtube viewing.

I got premium for $1.50 per month by VPNing to Argentina. Google thinks I live at a Burger King in Buenos Aires.
Myanmar no longer works. Use Somalia 
Edit: No location works consistently. Google is just presenting ads in all regions, whether it’s allowed to monetize from them or not

Simple answer for ad removal vis VPN is to check here it will show which counties block monetisation and hence ads.
Albania works perfect, I’m never paying for that Premium

I use Surfshark and I connected to Bhutan. Not only are there no ads, but I can download videos offline for free!!!
It my experience it won’t work with an Apple TV running a vpn directly on the device.
I wish for Safari on Apple TV so I can use adblock pro. Google will not get a cent from me for YouTube.
